Commonwealth Triathlon Series
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 58m 44s
Overall Rank = 322/400
Age Group = Cyldesdale
Age Group Rank = 25/30
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special.
Event warmup:

Nothing except for riding down to the swim/bike transition area.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did not do race pace - I just took a cruise pace swim. I briefly got stuck behind a wall of slow swimmers and need to rethink how to avoid traffic. Same thing happened to me in the last triathlon. I chose not to use the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

I probably should have done race pace with a speed burst at the start, and swum to the side of the main field.
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

It was a long walk to the bike and then out of transition - the bikes were lined up side by side, 400 deep with the exit at the far end. I did not use the wetsuit because the distance was short and I did not want to go back to the transition to pick up my wetsuit afterwards ;-)
What would you do differently?:

I should learn how to run so that I can run in and out of the transition (see running).
Bike
  • 53m 35s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.80 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs were not at peak performance because I have been riding alot lately and did not taper. The ride was fine though, and I should have ridden harder. For some reason it always takes me 20 minutes or so to get up to speed on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Ride into pain instead of keeping too much in the gas tank for later.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
What would you do differently?:

I need to hydrate for the run on the bike, instead of in transition. Tape a gel to my bike and consume it before transition.
Run
  • 48m 40s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 15m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

My running truly stinks (if you can even call it running), but I have no choice. The running will come... eventually!!!
What would you do differently?:

Don't choose a triathlon with probably more than 1/2 the running course uphill! What was I thinking???
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running performance. I would be satisfied if I could get the run down to 10 minute miles.

Event comments:

The race was well organized and on time. Everything was great except the run course, which I thought was excessive in the hill department.

There was more than one downhill? The only one I noticed during the entire race was the one just before the 110 degree turn on the bike course. Wow,  that was rough.

Congratulations on finishing!

Congrats!

We learn a lot from racing. Running will come around....but now you are building your base and having fun biking a man after my own heart.

With all those hills on the run not sure I'd ever opt to do it.

Thanks. Sorry for delay. I didn't know about these posts. The two downhills were the one going down to the swim/bike transition, and the 2nd one was before the sharp right turn in the first 1/3 of the bike course (just after the hill).
