Age Group Rank = 13/22
Pre-race routine:

Got to the site after two mostly sleepless nights camping. Not complaining about the camping though. Haf my brother and his wife as well as Kelly the kids and I up since Friday.
Event warmup:

Little stressful micromanaging my daughter and brother on their first tri's. Kevin did the half IM and Aly did the sprint. 1st in her age group btw!!!!
Swim
  • 31m 4s
  • 2414 meters
  • 01m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a good swim. I have swam a lot less this year and actually feel like I have learned to calm down and am actually swimming better.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Had a good tranition spot so this went pretty fast. Was nice to see a lot of the elite athletes who started 2 minutes before me running into transition after I was all ready there.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I was pretty dissapointed in this ride. I went slightly faster last year but the roads also were not chip sealed. I hate that crap. 25 miles of chip seal. I put in a lot more effort on this ride than I wanted to. Legs were just not there. Should have backed off because it would get me later.
What would you do differently?:

Little slower
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Moved through ok. Should have put on hydration bely.
Run
  • 2h 29m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Absolute disaster. My legs never felt good on the bike and they completely left me on the run. Worse than that was my heart rate. I could not get it to go below 170 despite walking quite a bit. I would spike it to 180-183 while running 10 minute miles and then walk to try and get it down. Would not happen. Actually started to think I may have to drop. Was getting very sick feeling.Need to figyer out what went wrong today. When I finished I seriously considered hitting medical. Wanted to vomit and my leg muscles were cramping EVERYWHERE. Looked like a couple a chipmunks running around in my calves.
What would you do differently?:

?
Post race
Warm down:

Kelly walked me to medical and I contemplated for awhile. Eventually just went down to the lake and cooled off for 15 minutes or so.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being use to thew heat? Heat exhaustion?

Event comments:

I'll probably do this race again. Just had a bad day.

COOL STUFF!!
Aly did her first adult sprint and finished 1st in her age group.
Brother did his first tri ever and finished the HIM course. I saw him when I was at mile 7.5 and he was at 4 and I was pretty worried about him. Didn't look good. Apparantly he found his legs shortly after because he finished good. Only 12 minutes behind me.

Congrats on the finish! I know you are disappointed with the way it went, but I think you did great! Look at the swim for one thing--woo hoo!

Way to finish a tough day!  Awesome swim.  I agree about the chip-seal.  Stuff sucks and makes it so much harder to go fast.  Hateful.  Big congrats to Aly!

Nice rice Bryan.

I know its not what you expected, but we learn more this way.  With the HR spiking that high, even when walking, my bet would be that you were dehyrdated.  Look back at the race and see if you went to the bathroom at all?

Its now time to acknowledge and move on!  We have bigger fish to fry!

What an amazing swim!~!!! I can't imagine running a half marathon and not feeling good the entire way. I'm thinking I would be DNF! Way to stick it out!

Great job!  Sorry it wasn't what you hoped, but you still pulled a good half-mary time for feeling bad.  Congratulations to Aly!

Bryan,  very nice swim and good bike.  The run was hard as the day got hotter.  Very little shade on the run course.  Sounds like a good race with everything uou had going on!  Good to see you for a quick hello pre-race.
