Pre-race routine:

Made my checklist and packed stuff up the night before. Removed tool bag and extra water bottle from bike. Rode bike to race site (1 mile). My travel coffee cup fits in the water bottle holder. Setup transition, chit chatted, tried to take pictures (all of them were blurry).
Event warmup:

Ran an easy mile. Swam 100m. Stood in line for ~30 minutes.
Swim
  • 07m 34s
  • 383 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was really surprised my bib # was so low. I talked to the other number around me to let them know to pass if they needed to and that I would stop at the wall if needed. Started out hard in an attempt to catch up to the person in front of me and draft. I never got up.

At each wall (50m pool) I would look back - so far, so good. At the 200m point, I saw the closest person behind me hadn't made it to the wall in the lane behind me (>50m). This hurt me mentally. I allowed myself to breast stroke from ~225m to 300m. I did finish with the crawl.

Even with the breast stroke, I managed to break 2min/100yd. First time in a race doing this.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the entire distance in crawl.
Transition 1
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

Fiddled with my helmet buckle. Finally got it buckled. Struggled into my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get tri-shoes.
Bike
  • 37m 2s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Went out moderate to begin with. After the turn around (~2 miles) started pushing harder. At 3 miles remaining, went all out. Leap frogged one guy several times (#169).

Super secret goal was to catch up with Karen (KSH). Her bib# was 22 so there was no way. I saw her once on the bike course.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was happy with the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

I've tried pulling my feet out of my shoes in training with no luck. I have road shoes and need tri-shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Get tri-shoes.
Run
  • 27m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

3 of the top 5 men were running their cooldown behind me the entire time. I was listening to their stories. I was moderately pushing the majority of the run. The last 1/2 mile was pushing hard.

Stayed behind #169 the majority of the way. The last 1/2 mile I passed him for good.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around. Eat pancakes. Talk with Brandon (bmcgee), Jonny (JBrashear), Karen (KSH), & Gary (Gaarryy).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. I took off ~2 1/2 weeks at the beginning of July for vacation.

Event comments:

They did a great job with the event. They were late starting the swim (7:20 instead of 7). A ton of volunteers out there. I will do it again.
