Putting together at 60 mile tour of Martha's Vineyard on Aug 23 for BTer's and interested other folks! Week before cranberry so we all wont get beat up (unless you are into that sort of thing you'll get a map and off you go) take breaks at each lighthouse along the way (east chop, west chop, gay head, edgartown) as needed and have a good time.

I have a condo in falmouth so we can start from there and bike to the Island Queen (2 miles) and return the same way. The queen leaves quite often so we dont need to worry about time right now but safe to say mid morning would be best since the ride and time on-island would look to be 6-8 hrs getting back on the mainland by late afternoon-evening.  I can flop a few folks at my place if anyone would like.

same week as barack in on the island so perhaps he can join us eh? at least for a beer at the offshore ale house for a teachable moment.

Well, you can help solving individual health crisis.  Isn't that your job?

I am not sure if I am up to 60 miles though.

ETA:  Maryann:  if you are slow, I am turtle crawl.

I think Barry and I would be up for it! Not sure if we can go 60 miles yet...the most we've done so far is 20 miles, lol. But, would love to see Martha's Vineyard and the BTers, esp. Sue!!

This sounds like a fun ride. I don't know if I will be up for 60 by then as I have been slacking big time this whole summer! I will keep an eye on this thread though.

No prob for the folks who might not be up to it. I suspect that might be the case for many so we will work with that. It wont be a killer ride, stop and go as needed. The western side is a bit rolly the rest is pretty flat. more of a tour and fun.

Looks like a great crew so far!!!  lets hope for good weathah.

I am interested as well. This would be my longest ride to date (first season doing the tri thing) and I'm not sure where I would fit in speed-wise, but this sounds like a flexible sort of ride, so I'm game! Please put me in the maybe column (potential schedule issues but I think it will work out).

Thanks!

Ohhh!  I'd love to join, howevah, I'll be returning from NJ after dropping off daughter at my folks for a week of "Bond with your grandchild" program.  I'm very jealous.

If it goes well, maybe repeat it in the fall??

Plan to check with the family about coming along (maybe hub will ride as well).  I will also probably not do the full 60- maybe stop at a Mad Martha's for ice cream instead!  I will also be part of the turtle trio with MAV!!

What time do we anticipate finishing the ride?  I have to be back in NYC Sunday night since I have early patients on Monday.  I was hoping to play hooky, but no luck.  It will take 4.5 hrs to do the ride home, and that's without traffic.

Any more details on the ride? I just mapquested it, and it looks like about a 70 mile drive from where we live in Boston to Falmouth. Just trying to decide when we would need to leave the city. Anyone else coming from Boston that would want to carpool?

Doesn't look like Glen has been on BT on a few days.  I sent him a message asking him if we should all try to meet for a specific time ferry.  Look up steamship authority and at the ferry times.  I think he wanted to bike to Woods hole from his house and grab the ferry.  He lives close and most of the parking is remote which is a pain because not all the busses allow bikes.

ay all!

going to post some updated info today but looking at a 9am(sunday) boat (island queen) out of falmouth to oak bluffs. They run boats all day so if some folks just want to meet the BT gang later in the day and do their own thing while other are riding that;s cool. (i.e. some folks may want to bring family, just be tourists or not be into such a long ride) (the vineyard also rents mopeds for those that want to be at the lighthouses and see things but not up to the ride)

return boat as warranted however looking at 6 pm ish.

First thoughts are to have folks park at my condo at woodview dr. in falmouth (mapquest) and bike the 1.5 miles to the queen at falmouth harbor. 35 min boat ride to OB harbor. assemble and head to east chop light house in OB for photo op. slide over to vineyard haven to west chop lighthouse for another visit. (total so far about 5 miles or so) Then head to menemsha via lamberts cove rd. This part of the ride is the longest and rolling. not hellacious hills like new hampshire but rollers with pretty views.  about 15 miles. at menemsha we will take a bike ferry across a channel and head to gay head lighthouse for stop and pics. I have a running bud right in aquinnah (gay head) who may bike but will also open his place up for a pit stop and a place to each a lunch.

Then ride the long but relatively flat road over to edgartown and stop by the lighthouse there. from e-town there is a bike path to OB and the terrain is very flat and scenic. At OB at the end of the ride there are a few places to chow down (offshore ale house), the flying horsed carousel, gingerbread houses, etc.

Overall, there are stops at 2 mi, 5 mi, 15 mi, 25 mi, 35 mi, 45 mi. or for those that want to ride straight that is fine. For those that want a short and flat ride they can start in OB and reverse course and meet up with the gang as they move easterly.
