Halfpint and I are going back and forth about this one, the $20 entry fee is very tempting but the trek out there from Raleigh is not going to be very fun. Is anyone doing it or have you done it in the past?  Did you like it?   I could certainly use the OW experience since my last OW race didn't go over so well but wanted to get others thoughts.
Thanks!

I'm in.  For $20.00 can you afford not to.  This will serve nicely in place of a Saturday morning brick workout.  See you all there!

I'm signed up for Mayo Lake. It will be my first tri this season due to working two jobs and the races filling up faster than I was prepared for. I am very excited and the $20 entrance fee was a strong incentive!

I am definitely racing, but it looks like I will be going back to Raleigh afterwards and going to NVA the next day. If anyone in the triangle wants to carpool let me know. I have a pickup truck and can rack a bike in the back.

I signed up as well. Was going to do Lake Norman, but I wanted to experience another series, so off to Mayo I go.

Pre-race I'll have my black REV3 long sleeve shirt on, during race double 2xu top/bottom, post-race who knows...but I'll be around

I'm doing it! I'm the tall nerdy looking guy with glasses, biking really slowly.

I did the bike a couple of weeks ago. Careful on one of the crossroads it is really bumpy!!!

Beautiful area. I live in North Durham (and it is not easy to rush it up Roxboro road (old 15/501) so you should probably believe Mapquest--it is not on any major highway). It took me over 50 minutes from North Durham, so plan the time accordingly.

The lake looked gorgeous.

Note, today is the last day to get 20 dollar registration!

Wow, so I have to leave an hour early just so that I can get there by 6am to pick up my packet? That seems like more trouble than it's worth. Race doesn't start till 8am...I don't get it?

For those in the RDU area, pickup at Crabtree Valley Mall is pretty convenient tonight from 5-7pm. So I take the above posts to mean that they changed the body marking time as well? I don't want to cut it close but I also don't want to get there way early where I get sleepy and hit a morning slump from waiting around.

Hey folks, stumbled across this site this morning while looking for some info on Mayo Lake.  I'll look forward to using this site going forward as I completed my first Tri (Triangle Triathlon) last month.

I agree that the pickup at Crabtree is SWEET.  I live in Raleigh and wasn't looking forward to getting out there super early to get my packet.  It's supposed to be a beautiful area - I like that we get to go over the lake a couple of times on the bike.

I plan on picking up my packet tonight around 5 PM at Crabtree. Maybe I'll see some of you there.

I'm excited about Mayo Lake too as I wanted to this tri last year but didn't get the chance. How intense is the bike and run hillwise? I typically do all my running on the trails at Umstead Park so I should be ok with the uneven terrain.

Two or three challenging hills (in the first half of the bike), and  the rest of the course is pretty rolling and easy. Watch out for one road that is very poorly paved.  Overall though a beautiful route in a gorgeous part of the state.

The great: weather, volunteers, the general ambience

The good: felt good on the bike and swim (though my bike time was not great)

The bad: there was a spindly log in the water near swim exit, long rocky walk to swim start, my run (egads that run was brutal)

Times:
Swim: 14:59 (goal was 17:30)
T1:2:24
Bike: 52:00 (goal was 45:00)
T2: 1:24
Run: 34:59 (goal was 30:00)

I have done tons of work on my swim, and it is finally starting to pay off. My bike and run have suffered. It is time to really focus on the bike, as that has the biggest impact on overall time.

Congrats on a job well done! Hope you didn't get hurt by that spindly log...? I agree 110% with the quote highlighted in blue above!

yea...i was 20th in my AG in a complete time of 1:37:00

my swim was drastically improved from the 25mins last time to the 17 mins this time...woot!

On the bike, i kinda sat back and took it easy...i think i was baskin in my swim glory and by the time i kicked it, i was only a few miles out from dismount...on the run i fought a cramp the WHOLE way...unbelievable! i was all whining and making noises cuz it hurt so bad. And yes the run SUCKED. Especially in Saucony racers!!! i felt rocks, roots, ditches etc...guess i shoulda read the packet info theat this was a trail run =/

oh well...onto Pinehurst!

Had a great time on a beautiful course with awesome weather. It was overall very well organized and I was impressed by FS.

I do have one beef though. I'm not typically one to make excuses, but I didn't feel that bad on the run and still managed to run it 8 minutes slower than a training run I did on trails last week.

I think the course was long by perhaps as much as a half mile. I mean, noone broke 20 minutes? That doesn't make any sense.

If they make sure the run course is accurate and maybe make some mile markers on the run course for pacing, it was great.

I agree, was a fun race, but that run had to be long. I felt like I was going fast enough to break a PR and instead I ended up with one of my slowest runs this season. Tough to measure a trail run like that I think.

Goods: great atmosphere, nice location, great crowd.
What I'd like to see improved: Not enough post-race beverages that I saw, but I could have missed it? Walk to swim start was nasty. Coming out of the water was rough, but I don't think there was a way around that? Transition area was crowded/family in transition area. I know I'm kind of a jerk, but setting up my transition area while dodging family members was frustrating. I also had to lift my bike over a few heads to get to the bike start. Lastly, just try to leave packet pickup open a bit later.

Still, for 20 bucks you can't beat it and I'd do it again next year.

By the way, if you saw a guy at the bike start off to the right working on a rear wheel, that was me.
