Subject: Advanced Full Ironman - 17 Weeks - Lack of Long Runs Question

Has anyone else successfully used this plan for a Full Ironman?  My concern is with the amount (or lack thereof) of long runs in the plan.  There are only 4 runs of over 2 hours, and they are barely over two, and only 1 run that is over 3 and thats not even a continuous run ... its broken up into two different runs at separate times during the day.  Im freaking out a bit that the lack of runs over 15 miles is going to come back and get me late in the marathon.  I did runs of up to 18 miles using the Beginner plan last year for IMKY and suffered a bit on the run.  I was hoping to improve that this year and make up alot of time.

I guess theres not much I can do about it now since IMKY is only a month away, but would be nice if others who have used this plan or something with a similar low run threshold had positive results.  Ive been pleased with all of the plans I have used from this site thus far so I have faith, but need a warm fuzzy.

Suffering late on the run is MUCH more about the bike (and swim) than it is about the lack of long runs.  The plan you are following sounds appropriate.  I didn't run more than ~16 prior to my first IM.  I might make ~18 this time, but only on about the same number (4 or so) of runs over 2 hours.  I'm not concerned by that.

I agree with JohnnyKay...it's more about the bike.  Your bike fitness will carry over to the run.  In addition, you should get off the bike feeling like you're ready to run a marathon.  I plan to run 4 runs of about 2:30 and one of 3:00.  Looking at your logs, you had 576 miles on the bike in July and over 100 miles running.  You'll be fine.  Relax!

Thanks for the sanity check!  Using the bike time a yard stick, from April - July, Im up 22 hours on my bike training over last year (31%).  And now that I look at it, Im actually up a little over an hour (3%) from last year in the run ... purely due to an overuse injury that I had in June 08 though ...

OK ... Im good now.  Thanks

My longest run before my IM last year was 13.1 miles.  And I was running more in the latter stages of the marathon than most of the people still out there with me.

Ride your bike and the run will fall into place.  Besides, if you run too much you stand a much greater chance of getting injured.

I am so relieved to hear that! I haven't ran much this summer at all since injuring my ankle on June 7th. My "long" run right now is 5 miles and I'm training for IMAZ. I'm hoping that my swim and bike focused plan with a little bit of running will allow me to finish my first IM

Not following a plan but using a coach....I've done quite a few 3+ hour runs and lots 2.5+ hour runs. Sunday will be 3rd 16 miler and I've done 1 18 straight and 1 14 am/4 pm so 18 in a day.

I hear what others say but really can't imagine that working for me. I've worked hard at run durability and running more often. They idea of only running 2 hours and then running 5.5 in an IM, don't see how that can really work. When I bump up my runs from one week to the next just 2 miles, those two miles are tough.

Thing is we have to trust our plan or our coach. Lots of different ways to train to be ready.

I'm in the same boat training for IMAZ with a compression fracture sustained on July 16th.  I'm in the pool for around 10K this last week, but I haven't been on the bike yet and anticipate that my longest run by the time I hit IMAZ will be no more than 10 miles.

I'll be thinking of you with your ankle injury and thinking positive tones for the both of us to make it to our first Ironman.

When I trained for a stand alone marathon I did some 4x 20 mile runs.  For the IM last weekend I did mostly 15 mile runs with a few 16-17 mile runs.  However I put in 4800 miles on the bike in the last year and ran the day after a my long ride so my run were on tired legs.  It worked well for me and my IM run was only 20 minutes slower than the stand alone marathon and felt better in that I was able to finish strong and kick the last 3 miles.

So, ya you can do it on 15-17 mile runs and ya you need to be strong on the bike.  Anyway that is my limited experience.
