Do y'all use "electrode gel" with your heart rate monitors or do you just use them with nothing but your nekkid body? The place I'm planning to buy my monitor from is pimping some electrode gel and I'd like to know if it's a necessity or a luxury. Thanks for your input...

Save your francs and go nekkid. The only other thing I do is wet the transmitter strap in the sink before putting it on. A completely dry monitor sometimes gives funny readings or none at all until you give out some conducting sweat. With a little bit of water, I've never had a problem.

Agreed, water works just fine.  I almost bought the gel but decided not to spend the cash.  Hadn't given it another thought until now.  I usually wet the piece and my skin where it will be and it works just fine.

Also agree with use of water. Most of the heart rate monitors' instructions say to use water anyway.

good luck!

I use spit.  It works too.

I have used spit and generic KY Jelly that is available at the grocery/drug stores.
In the winter the HRM seems to be a little more sensitive so I find the gel works really well for the first couple of miles until I start to sweat.

Speaking of the remarkable qualities of spit, it's good for defogging your goggles too.

They're definitely pimping. Spit/water works perfect. It's free too.
