Gulf Coast Triathlon - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

Sunny
Total Time = 5h 35m 3s
Overall Rank = 572/1887
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 86/161
Pre-race routine:

Got there early to set up transition area, had some coffee, bagel, banana.
Event warmup:

Forced taper due to sick children, on the day before the race did a short bike run swim just to loosen up from the drive and make sure everything worked.
Swim
  • 34m 26s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

For some freakish reason, I had clear water throughout the swim except for one incident near the end. This even includes rounding the bouys, which I usually swing wide of in order to avoid the chaos. This was my first experience with a wetsuit in salt water and you really fly!
What would you do differently?:

Apparently my HR tells me I should have pushed harder, even though this is a PR for me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

This was only my second experience with a wetsuit in a race. The first time there were wetsuit strippers. Boy, do they make a difference! I was not prepared for how difficult getting out of my suit would be.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more with the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 2h 38m 51s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Another PR for me. Laid down in the aero bars almost the whole way and was mostly confortable.
What would you do differently?:

I may need to tweak my seat position.
Transition 2
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

The racks had a spot with your specific number on it and the guys on either side of me had me crowded so I had to move a bike just to be able to fit mine in.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, very happy with it.
Run
  • 2h 14m 46s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my first run of this distance where I have been able to run the whole thing. I even breezed by some aid stations. Another PR for me.
What would you do differently?:

I think I'd like to train even better for the run and increase both my pace and my consistancy.
Post race
Warm down:

Got in the shade with my recovery drink and put my feet up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The only improvements I could make would be even more bike and run time. I had a training plan that included track workouts, but my training partner switched to cycling only. Could have done them by myself, no one to blame but myself.

Event comments:

I last did this event in 2002 and the expo was much bigger. This year the expo was maybe a quarter of what it was then. Other than that its a good event. The training I've kept up since IM WI last year has paid off and I'm happy with my results. Although I'm sure the mild weather this year contributed to my strong performance. When I did this event in 2002 the ambient temperature during the run was 104.

Wow, I am envious of your pace. Geat swim, smokin bike time, and steady run, great race! I'm really thinking about doing this race next year.

Thanks for sharing the RR, congrats on a strong finish.  I was at the race, too (#1309).  It was a great day to swim/bike/run!
