Subject: $1 per minute massage after full iron distance?
One of my friends did Vineman this past weekend and mentioned the massages cost $1 per minute after the race.
Is this the way races will be in the future? I've always seen massages included free for athletes, even at rinky-dink local Sprint races and even a local 5K.

What do you think about this? Would you pay $1 per minute for a massage?

Never mind, the happy-ending joke is too easy and obvious.  Carry on.

Nope, but I gladly tip when it's a really good massage and I pick up a business card for future reference. I'd be much more inclined to go to a place that gave free massages and gave a good one, vs. one that paid (cause I'm not going to even get one that pays, so I'm not going to pay attention to them).

I've never seen free massages at local races. They've all either been a flat fee or a suggested Tip of X amount.

That said, I don't really want one right after a race and I really don't want to lay on table that has had sweaty dudes crawling around for hours.

The front of packers who finish under 9 hrs (540 minutes) and paid $500 to race.  This alos is about $1 per minute!  Personally I like to get my money's worth so I took 14 1/2 hrs on my last IM....so I only paid about $0.57 a minute to race.  ;-)

IMAZ last year had free massage for athletes.  They had about 20 or 30 tables setup under a big tent.  Well, it wasn't really massage, it was more stretching.  I asked the guy doing the stretching about why not massage.  He said massage wasn't recommended immediately after finishing an event.

Yep, always too crowded. And I really don't want any touching my sweating, nasty body.

I also would want to tip, and I never have any cash on me at a race.

I was wondering why it seemed kind of anemic

Tipping....really?  At an IM?  Why?  I don't tip the volunteers handing me water or the change tent volunteer stuffing my sweaty clothes back in the t-bag or the bike taker racking my freshly pee'd on bike.  Those people deserve a tip more imo than the massage guy.

Interesting! I wonder why so many races have them then... maybe just a difference in opinion?
I know after my first HIM I couldn't walk properly after finishing so I got a massage and could walk normally again.

I've known others who have gotten one right after a marathon and said it did wonders...

But anyway, I just thought it was strange for massages to COST something after an iron-distance race.

Word, I don't think they'd want the $5 I pull out of my tri shorts that day either.

At least two that I've been two, some of them are massage school students

So isn't making them massage sweaty triathletes a form hazing?

Only if they have to chug after each limb

Probably different business models.  The people doing sprints are usually local, so the masseuse might be willing to donate a few hours of "free" massage to the race organization specifically as a way to build a client base.  Most of the 2200 people at IMCdA weren't local, so the only contact they would have would be the 5 minutes after the race.  I got an e-mail offering the same $1 per minute for Steelhead.  For CdA, I was more interested in the medical tent than the massage/pizza/??.

It really isn't out of line with what is charged for a regular massage ($50-75 per hour around here).  The advantage is you can buy relatively small increments.

They were free after my IM and almost no wait since I finished so darn late.

At most races I've seen it both ways...free or pay.  I never have money on me so I don't ever pay...cause I can't!  And I've only gotten one free one (IMAZ) since they are usually too crowded or have packed up by the time I'm done.

Often they are massage schools trying to get experience....hence why they don't mind working free.  I would REALLY like to see RD's work to get free post-race massages...if you call enough LMT's you'll find some that will volunteer.

And they should NEVER do anything really major...just some stretching and light work...a massage that soon after a race could cause damage otherwise.

After finishing IM FL my skin HURT to touch it.  It's was really sensitive and felt like it was all bruised- although I didn't have any discoloration or anything.  I'm so glad they did more of a "stretch" than massage.  Because had it been a massage I would have been in pain.

Still wondering why that happens to me in endurance events- it's so weird... Does anyone else have this problem?

Do you have to pay extra to get in on the "chug after each limb" part of that? Or does that fall under post-race food?

I felt that. I remember on the marathon it HURT to even scratch myself. I just hurt all over. Wasn't sure if this was a skin or a muscle thing... either way, I hurt from heat to toe. Touching myself hurt.
