Subject: Heart rate monitors, run computers, iPhone apps..
Looking to get something to help on my runs better.  In the very least I need a watch with a stop watch and I think a heart rate monitor would keep me honest.  I think I tend to be too comfortable when I'm running.

I'm also in the midst of getting a new phone, two candidates being the BlackBerry 8900 and the iPhone 3Gs.  Both have built in GPS which gives them some interesting capabilities... so I'm thinking the iPhone with one of these apps might be a useful training tool along with a simple heart rate monitor of sorts.

Does anyone use their GPS enabled phone for this sort of thing?  I think I'm going to see if I can borrow my wife's 3Gs and try one of these out.  I need a new phone anyway and if it will give me some good info along side of a simple heart rate monitor... why not?

The iPhone with smHeartlink looks promising, but unfortunately Apple does not allow apps to run in the background.  You can collect your data or you can answer a phone call, not both...

Until I got serious I used the iphone with pathtracks or pathtracker app.  The only drawback was that I couldn't use it for hours.  It was fine for most of my runs.  I could start my music and use pathtracker at the same time.

Now I use the garmin 405.  It's the best thing out there for me.  tad bit pricey though.

I have the iphone 3G and use iMapMyRun.  This utility is the best, it uploads all of your run information on to the http://www.mapmyrun.com/  website where you can view all of your training.  It can also track other activities as well.

You can also listen to your ipod at the same time, you just have to start the music first then launch the imapmyrun application.

If you want info to improve your run, scroll down to the Garmin Forerunner 305 thread and go get one at your local best buy for 129.99  That has everything you need.  Everything else will be either twice as much or do half as much.  My opinion.

X2....the Forerunner 305 right now seems to be the best mix of price and functionality (IMO), particularly if you are just getting started with heart rate zone training.   I've used it for 8 months and don't see myself changing or upgrading for a long time.
