Ok .. so my parents are planning to drive from Southern Alberta to Yuma, Arizona (where my uncle has a vacay home). They have purchased no guides, and are relying on simply road maps to get them down .. "oh darling, we'll stop when we see something interesting!" ...

Anyone who lives in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, SoCal, and Arizona - do you have any off-the-beaten-path, cool places to stop, neat things to see, awesome highways to drive, kind of recommendations? Their only real plan is to stop in/around Vegas for a few days on the way down, then go from there ...

My parents are both overweight so hiking is out of the question ... it would have to be things they can see from a tour or a highway stop.

Also - any hotels/motels worth recommendation along this fluid route? They'll go wherever the stops are ... I actually really envy their "go with the flow" mentality.

Thanks BT!

They will most likely cross the Hoover Dam on US 95 on the way out of LV south, hits the 40 freeway in Arizona.

Four corners is a must.  Nice brief stop for sure....and I think it was only $3 to get in.

I wonder if their route takes them past Devil's Tower in Wyoming?

If they are really sporty they should jaunt into Western South Dakota and hit up Mount Rushmore....and the myriad of other touristy things to do in and around Rapid City.

Not sure if they are heading quite this way, but Arches national Park near Moab, Utah is awesome. So is Moab.

another plug for Arches National Park in southern Utah. Super touristy but out of this world scenery, most of which you can see without walking more than a few hundred feet from your car. The desert country of S Utah is one of my favorite places on the planet.

My two favorite paved drives in Colorado are Independence pass between Aspen and Leadville and the pass between Durango and Ouray (forget the name). Both paved but not for someone afraid of heights.

and I'd stay far, far away from vegas, but that's just me. Not my cup of tea.

If they're going western route, cannot miss Yosemite

And maybe finishing up, Grand Canyon and then AZ via Sedona.

Staying in the GC park is a cr@p shoot, hard to get a room on short notice, but worth it.   Briar Patch Inn in Sedona is marvelous

I would have them avoid Arches--there's not much to see without some hiking. It is pretty, but you can only see Delicate Arch off in the distance without a 5 mile hike. BUT it is beautiful and there are LOTS of cool rock formations, with a short 1 mile loop walk (sometimes less). I would steer them towards Zion National Park, and Bryce National Park (both also in Southern Utah). Zion's offers guided bus tours, and doesn't allow much (if any) private care traffic. It has kept the scenery picturesque, and you don't have to find a parking spot.

If they end up in Salt Lake they should come see the temple grounds in downtown Salt Lake (I know, but they have some beautiful landscaping and historic buildings).  On the way out of town, at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley there's a place called Thanksgiving Point that has some gorgeous gardens. I hear that's not to be missed (I keep saying I'll walk through someday...).

There's always the Olympic Park up in Park City, as well as shopping and the quaint feel of the older part of town, with walkable shops and restaurants.

And most of the local ski resorts are beautiful this time of year, and offer rides on their trams and ski lifts to get e birds-eye view of the mountain surroundings.

I second the vote(s) for Sedona-it's beautiful down there!

If I can think of anything else, I'll holler. It really just depends on the types of things/settings they like.

When are they going?

I'd just like to know why anyone would go to Yuma... ugh.  But seriously, everyone has given good recommendations.  I drove from Eugene, Oregon to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina back when I bought a truck from my grandfather.  The go with the flow mentality is the way to see this country and really appreciate it.

Definitely Moab, Definitely the Grand Canyon, Salt Lake City's nice, Sedona's nice.  I envy them.

Beartooth Highway (Montana, NE of Yellowstone) is a great drive.

Other than that, plan at least a little ahead.  You may find that the next place for gas is 2+ hours.  The town where you were going to stay is booked and the next town that might have a hotel is another 3 hours.

^^True that!  Gas stations are few and far between in Canada too though no?

Alright... I'd most likely take Rt. 15 South if coming from Calgary/Alberta area. There is a border crossing on Rt89 which takes you right next to Glacier National Park. 89 hits Rt. 15 outside of Great Falls. You pass through Helena on the way. Then a quick jont East to Yellowstone and then south to Grand Teton. Back to 15 it will take you through Salt Lake City. Bryce and Zion are relatively close to one another and just off route to the east. 15 then takes you into Vegas. From there you have to change roads. Cross the Hoover Dam on 93. Grand Canyon is a long diversion... I'd skip it. 93 takes you to Phoenix then it is just a quick diversion to Sonoran National Monument and off to Yuma.

If they jaunt over to Southern Idaho, Crater's of the Moon is really neat. There is a nice driving loop.

Yellowstone is amazing.

If they drive down from Glacier they can take two lane roads through the Idaho wilderness and into Sun Valley - absolutely beautiful.

Thanks BT! This is awesome keep it coming! I forwarded this info on to my mom this afternoon and she is overwhelmed with all the information - she really appreciates it. They are planning to take 7-9 weeks total, spend half that time driving around and the other half at my uncle's vacation home in Arizona. They're not leaving for a few months yet, so have lots of time to prepare. They had never travelled ever in their life until the past few years, since their retirement, so this is something I really want to be able to help and support them on.

She's told me now that they also intend to hit Nebraska and The Dakotas on their way back. Although they're leaving from Southern Alberta (Calgary) they live in a small town in Manitoba so will be headed back that way. Anything interesting in Nebraska? ;-)

If any of you see two retirees in a big grey Dodge Ram with Manitoba plates - say hi to my folks! And please also spare them their small town ways. LOL.

Seriously??? Yes i think we have only have 10/province. Unless its too cold. Or the polar bears attack the workers.
Dude this could cause a spin off thread....Calgary is over 1 million people. Sure there are remote areas of Canada as well, but that was quite a blanket statement.
I know you probably didn't mean it that way, but I'm a little on edge tonight!!

No, some towns have *two* gas stations at the same intersection!

Coming back from CdA, things got a little testy after 11PM and we still didn't have a hotel.  It isn't like we drove past a few and said "nah...we don't need to stop here..."  Between 8PM and 11PM, we didn't drive past ANY hotels, and when we finally got to some, they were full.

I agree with Hoover Dam - even though it's not a "hidden" place - it's really cool in person. As for Glacier NP - sorry locals, but it's also too pretty to pass up.

OK - here's my "off the wall" cool place - have them go to Oatman, Arizona. It's an old mining town, but now a fun stop. There are wild donkeys in the streets, literally. They get right of way when you're entering/leaving. There are some great shops, restaurants and a bar. One of the famous restaurants is totally covered (all wall space) with dollar bills signed by the "donation makers." The old hotel is where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon. He liked to play poker with the miners.

Hope they enjoy!
