Elite 2553 Tucson, AZ | Subject: Pet peeves at tris? So what are some of the annoying things you’ve come across at tris? The things that grate on your nerves just a little bit or make you roll your eyes and go "Sheesh!" • When I come in from the bike, and someone has racked their bike directly on top of my run stuff. I have to push their bike over so that I can get mine in and get to my run stuff. • When people who are not racers, race staff, or volunteers partake of the post-race food or people that take too much so that there’s nothing left when the people still racing on the course come in. • Spectators that are oblivious to the bike course and stand right where the bikes are turning to get to T2, despite repeated warnings from cops or race volunteers. • Racers that are rude to volunteers or race staff. |

Extreme Veteran 586 Waterboro, Maine | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? I have only done two tri's but neither had any kid's activities. At mountain bike races, they ALWAYS have short kid's course. So many of the racers are parents so it is nice for the kids to have something to do while Mom or Dad races. All the kids win something and it is very positive experience. I wish the Tri culture was more inclusive of families. - Maureen |

Master 1359 South of SLC | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? I second the rude racers. I really hate the bullies that try and muscle their way around. I am a bigger guy and I don't mind jumping into a verbal "discussion" if there is clearly someone getting bullied. You guys know the type -- when I get involved usually the bully says something like "hey man, I got no beef with you." I always know I am dealing with a true p**** at that point. The other thing I hate is when the race does not have enough bike racks. Mike |

Master 1741 Boston | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? 1. People that are trying to cross the course to get to the other side ( I don't know, for a better view??) and walk right in front of the athletes- either during the run or bike. Hey buddy, why don't you wait til there's a BREAK in the crowd instead of playing human dodgeball! 2. Drivers on the BIKE COURSE!!! ARGH! I almost slammed into a car at St. A, who had "wandered" onto the bike course and was driving alongside the cyclists! The cops yelled at him to stop right now, which wasn't a good idea, since I was directly behind the car! Luckily I swerved to the side and avoided a nasty hit. |

Member 46 Orlando FL | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? I'm with you on the food thing. If you end up in one of the later waves (and somehow W40-49 end up there a lot) then by the time you get in (even if you had a great race) the big boys AND THEIR FAMILIES have pretty much eaten all the post-race buffet. It's bad in a small race, even worse in a bigger race (more waves = longer time until I start, more spectators/family. I also wonder if there is anything ever left for the volunteers who are course monitors? |

Veteran 296 | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? My overall experience has been very positive. My only peeve to date was with the individual who arrived just minutes before the race start and moved (shoved?) my setup over to make room for his. I gave myself plenty of time to setup my transition area, only taking a small amount of ground. This guy must have felt he needed a rack to himself and choose to move my gear completely over and use some of my real estate. I felt like dumping my water bucket on his socks but that would be poor sportsmanship, right? A suggestion for non-racing family members: volunteer! My older children have given out water, worked on the bike course, body marked, and helped with race packets. My youngest child is not quite ready for those advanced tasks so she has been designated "an official cheerleader." She was more than happy to yell, clap, and make a lot of noise all in the name of encouragement for all racers. |

Elite 2553 Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? Another one: People that complain about the race before it has even started. My 2nd sprint tri was at a small community college, in a small town. We were standing in line waiting for the swim start, and some guy loudly exclaims: “This is the cheesiest tri I’ve ever been to!” And then the guy walks off. Geez, no one was twisting his arm to be there. So myself and a bunch of people that were around made a bunch of wise cracks, making fun of the guy. |

Member 29 | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? Litterbugs! I hate'em. It really doesn't take much effort to tuck your empty gel pack inside the leg of your shorts until you get back to transition. I know its a rule violation, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone penalized for littering. When I did my first half we were just outside of town with only a few miles to go to transition and some guy on a high end tri bike ("I'm a top age grouper that can't be bothered with a few ounces") just chucks an empty water bottle into the trees next to the road. I'm sure its still there. I pulled up to him and told him what I thought. I'm surprised he wasn't waiting for me in transition. |

Master 1391 | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? I love crowd support...however, my biggest pet peeve is when someone from the crowd yells "you're almost there!!!" It really drives me up the wall, and usually what that means is that you have 5 more miles to go and it's all up hill. Other than that, I love people cheering on the side, that's what gets me through the race except for that one comment. |

Extreme Veteran 586 Waterboro, Maine | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? I agree with "you're almost there" comment. Yeah, you are almost there if you are driving in a car, but when it is a mile run up a steady hill, you are not almost there. I am almost there when I can see the finish line! |

Expert 1180 Iowa | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? Without a doubt, people who !@#$! with my transition area, ie., you jump on your bike for a quickie warmup ride, and when you come back some last-minute, low-life, late arrival with backpacks, coolers and a blanket has moved in. WTF!? Why don't you just tie your dog to my bike while you're at it!! |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? Only one tri done so far but there were a couple: - People that arrive 10 minutes before the start and get offended when you don't let them squeeze into the already full rack that's right near the exit of T1. - The finish to the run was along a sidewalk, basically, into the finish chute. There were a couple of racers that had already finished and were wandering around, walking along the sidewalk oblivious to the fact that there were people coming up behind them trying to finish the race. The spectators had to yell at them to get out of the way. Even worse, I think they were from the pro division. - People that pay no attention whatsoever to the pre-race announcements. You may be a pro with 500 races behind you and you've done this race for 10 years, but that doesn't mean there aren't changes you need to be aware of this year and it certainly doesn't mean you can talk over the announcer so that I can't hear. |

I am almost there when I can see the finish line! haha! what do you want them to say? "Five more miles up hill... I doubt you can do it but we are both here so give it a try!" Yeah, you are almost there if you are driving in a car, but when it is a mile run up a steady hill, you are not almost there. I am almost there when I can see the finish line! Even worse, when someone specifically lies to you about how far it is! A volunteer at one race, where I was just DYING told me "It's just 200 yards to the turn-around." There weren't any mile markers, so I believed her. 3/4 of a mile later, I'm at the turnaround! UGH! Lying to me did NOT help!!! |

Is it against the rules to get help putting on your wetsuit or set up your TA? I didn't see that in the official USAT rules (http://www.usatriathlon.org/Rules_Officials/rules.htm). Why would someone getting help putting on their wetsuit bother you? The race hasn't even started yet! bock |

Extreme Veteran 427 St. Louis, MO | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? Maybe my biggest peeve is when you get somebody that feels it imperative to pass you on the bike...............then slow down into their "normal" cadence once they get around you. I may not be perfect but I ride a fairly (1-3rpm varience) consistent tempo and in two of my last 3 1/2IM races I have had folks bolt by me and then slow way down.... In one instance I put on a 3 minute time trial effort and dropped the loser but in my most recent race I had one guy who started in the wave before me (meaning I had 10 minutes on him already) and he refused to let me just lead out...he would sprint by me only to have me chug on by in my normal tempo a few minutes later....this happened at least 15 times during a 56 mile ride. I was not going to ruin my race by trying to drop this knucklehead but c'mon.... Payback was mine in that we ran next to each other at about mile 5 of the run and shortly after that he faded into oblivion.....Moral of the story....race your race! |

T1 | Subject: RE: Pet peeves at tris? At the last race, my brother had some big problems with his bike and ended up being one of the last ones to finish. As he was running, some guy decided to run beside him during part of the run...not to encourage him, but to tell him about his WEB SITE that he should check out about triathlon training. I wish I had been there to tell the guy to shove it. DO NOT run next to someone finishing a tri, tell them they must not have trained right, and refer them to your website. I wish I had been with him so I could tell him what a jerkoff he was. Edited by vmr719 2005-05-10 2:55 PM |

But club rules for this event state: TRANSITION AREA: Entry to competitors with race numbers ONLY!. Please request family members and friends not to accompany you in the transition area. just a pet peeve that's all. I'm a Compliance Officer in the securities industry and I can't stand it when people blatantly disregard the rules! Whew, I feel better already! |
