My biggest pet peeve was doing my first tri, and being a novice, not being able to start until noon and it's already 99 degrees.

Then, by the time I get to any of the bike stops, there's no water and its a 102 degrees.

Then being told I'm not allowed to do the run portion because "it's too hot" and "no water", even though I made it within the time allotted to do the run.

Sure, I'm not buff or fast, but damn it, I trained hard to complete an Olympic traithlon. And not only didn't I get the option to complete..... I didn't even get the benefit of having more to drink than the two water bottles I had on my bike.

And this was supposed to be a world class triathlon.....

People were great..... event sucked.

Here are my biggies:

#1) People who block on the bike and don't get caught.  At K-Town last year, my whole bike leg was ruined by someone who would continuously pass me, then slow down in front and to the left of me.  To pass legally, you need TO PASS ON THE LEFT, and I couldn't because idiot was in the way.  I reported her race #, but never found out what happened.

#2) People who go wild and chuck stuff around in the transition area.  To this day, I don't put out a towel with stuff on it and use a bag.  During my first tri, I came into T1 to find my bike on the ground and my stuff scattered.  Takes less time to find stuff in a bag than scattered everywhere mixed in with other people's stuff.

#3) People who hog transition area space and then get in a snit when people ask them to move stuff to make room.

What annoys me are people who show up at the last minute and move your bike to make place for theirs.  This happened to me in one of my triathlons last year.  Rather than get upset, however, I just took my bike and my stuff and positioned myself on the other side of the rack.  The rules called for hanging no more than four bikes on each side of each rack and the other side of this rack was empty!

What REALLY annoys me are officials who are too busy flirting and fratenizing to bother enforcing the rules!!!

In case you didn't know why the Wildflower 2004 peeve was here.  It was 105 degrees at Noon.  Ground temp reached 120  at 2:00pm.  And it is already a tough course.

Now my peeve, I have two:

  1. Getting to transition in plenty of time, but finding the guy next to me needs more space the god for his transition, and I have to try and squeeze in because each spot is marked.
  2. I love people who do support a fund raising organization like TNT, but to only cheer when that organization goes by just isn't right.  Each of us have put in as much training time as they have.  You should cheer for everyone evenly.

Does your family "cheer for everyone evenly"? I would venture that they try, but that they cheer just a little more loudly for you and your friends. Multiply that little bit by dozens of people, dress 'em in purple, and all of a sudden the jryals family is a target for criticism.

CLLinIA - 2005-05-11 2:02 PM I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but it really annoys me when some fast cat on the world's most expensive bike cruises up to me on my very ordinary road bike and says something patronizing about how I'm doing really great, only a few more miles! I want to haul off and throw my water bottle in his 3-spoke wheel. Number 1, I KNOW I'm doing great, the bike is my strongest leg (patronize me on the swim or the run, sure, but not the bike). Number 2, if I'd spent more on my bike than on my car I'd give Zippy the Pinhead a run for the $. Number 3, don't talk to me during the race. What is that about? Are you hitting on me? Are you drafting off me? Shouldn't you be focused on breaking some sort of land speed record? Zippy probably thinks he's being supportive of some poor little age grouper. I hate that. I heart my bad attitude.

A little jealous touchy there aren't we? Over on the "likes" thread, several people are counting this "patronizing" encouragement as their favorite thing about a triathlon, and here you are calling it a "pet peeve"

Maybe wear a "DO NOT ENCOURAGE" sign on the back of your jersey (my wife has one she carries on my behalf), 'cause I'm going to continue to encourage everyone that I pass, or passes me, on any leg (except swim, 'cause those fast swimmers need to get a life).

Shockingly enough, in this instance I'd have to agree with The Bear. I've got a pretty nice bike, but I try to be nice to and encourage everyone I come across on the course. Let's face it, except for maybe 5% of the field we're all getting the same paycheck at the finish line. I thought we were out there to have fun, revel in our training, and encourage one another. I tend to think the people who are so "focused" on their race that the least disturbance in the force annoys them but are still mid packers are a bit strange.

Guilty as charged. But this isn't why some forms of "encouragement" bug me. Coming from some people the words of encouragement feel really patronizing, like they've paused to pat the little woman on the head for trying. Or tri-ing. Perhaps as men you haven't had the experience of being patronized as an athlete all your life regardless of how good you are and becoming a wee bit sensitive to it. Never assume that the woman racing beside you hasn't trained just as hard and isn't just as competitive as you. Also never assume that she doesn't have advanced training in the martial arts. That's all I'm saying.

my pet peeve (and it goes for tri's and running races, alike) is when they don't have small race shirts even though they have them as a choice on the registration or because they gave them all away.  apparently people grossly overestimate their size until they get to packet pickup and are pleasantly surprised to find that they are smaller then they thought.  then they take my shirt.  i have yet to get a race shirt that cannot be worn with a belt and heels.  someday i'll have one of those quilts made with all my giant shirts.
