Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 36/103
Pre-race routine:

Woke up 20 minutes late! Crap! Was hoping to get set up early at transition. Only slept 4 hours the night before... I feel like Dick Dime! Got off of work from the mall at 9 pm and got home at 10 pm. Mako was still awake and kept me up till 11:30pm. Got up at 3:50am and felt like dirt. I also was up at 5 am with only 6 hours of sleep the day before for Mako's tri as well in the sun for 5 hours... Oh well! I wouldn't trade that experience for anything in the world. My 5 year olds 1st tri was worth being sluggish today! :)

Had Uncle Sam's cereal and strawberries and coffe as usual. Then I was off!
Event warmup:

Just walking around a bit and a quick out and back in the water... nothing fancy! :)
Swim
  • 34m 3s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was a little choppy and crazy arms trew water right in my mouth...GULP! EWW! Yucky!

After some coughing and a little adjusting I settled into my groove and swam great! I put a lot of energy to recover from the coughing /gulping water mis-hap and I think pushed it a bit too much... I didn't have anything on the bike at 1st.

Very aggresive folks at this tri! I beat my swim time at Kansas so I'm stoked about that! I'm really getting good at open water swimming! Way better than I ever thought I'd be! It's begining to be my strength!

My best swim EVER! When I popped out of the water my watch read 33 min and 2 seconds... took a while to trot over to transtion!
What would you do differently?:

Concerve my energy and get more sleep the night before!
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

I just didn't have it on the bike! My legs weren't there!I still fumbled with the shoes but at least I have TRI specific bike shoes now & that quickend things up a bit! :)
Bike
  • 2h 43m 32s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I just didn't have it on the bike! My legs weren't there! I've been training on this course and have gone way fatser in the past! I'm not sure if it was lack of sleep or pushing too hard on the swim or both! But I was pooped at 1st and didn't feel right till mile 20 or so! Didn't feel right almost the whole ride! I still fumbled with the shoes but at least I have TRI specific bike shoes now & that quickend things up a bit! :)
What would you do differently?:

Sleep more and not push so much on the swim...
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

The bike wouldn't stay in the darn rack! Placed it in there like 10 times! Cheap rack!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really... maybe just lay down my bike I guess!
Run
  • 1h 51m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Again... I just didn't feel like myself! So darn tired and a headache too. I felt like I ran way faster than Kansas but I was 3 min slower today! Note to self - Rest is good!
What would you do differently?:

Sleep more the day before an train harder in the months prior.. maybe.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing really... played with the kids on the beach and swam with the boys some. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sleep and effort...

Event comments:

Overall I'm still VERY happy with a new PR for a 70.3! I just feel like I'm very capable of breaking 5 hours but loose it on the run... I'm workin' on it!

Plus, I did this race with TEAM IN TRAING and I'm very happy that I did this race in honor of my father who died back in 02' and also in honor for all of those who are battling blood cancers!

I also have made a ton of new friends and raised money for cancer research! That feels really good! :)

A little shaky at 1st and then I found my groove... only after swallowing a little water... it was a crazy start! Very aggresive folks at this tri! Nice race. Very solid in all events. There are always things to look back on and think they could have been done better, but you shouldn't beat yourself up over the race you had. WTG!

Nice race Sean and congrats on the PR!  You're young and have a lot of miles in front of you.  You'll get under 5-hours!

Great race Sean - nice PR!  And very cool of you to do the race with TNT for your dad!  That's pretty cool.

Great job on the PR! While I felt good yesterday on the bike I know what you mean about just not having it. I think the fatigue cycle on the bike is strange. There are days when I just feel amazing and others when I feel like lead. I can't make much sense out of it. I know that lots of pro riders almost never take days off because they think they recover better on the bike.

THAT IS A SICK TIME, SEAN... Just your second tri, both HIMs, and you are so fast! Your swim is your strength, but your bike and run are very good!. You will have some very fast times.
