Overall Rank = 5/67
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/16
Pre-race routine:

Late start for race at 1pm. Ate a good size breakfast, got there early and set up the area for the kids. Luckily there was a pool.
Event warmup:

Walk transitions, jog a little, swim a little.
Swim
  • 18m 1s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

First mass start swim and it took a little to get into the opening. Lots of arms and legs to deal with. Once it spread out it was fine. Lots of people seemed to take the far left side after the turnaround, but it seemed further than the line I took.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start a little more to the outside, but it gave me the experience I was looking for by starting in the middle of the group.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Did not seperate times for transitions. It was 500 yards through dirt roads and a muddy hill so I put on a pair of shoes (as did 99% of people) till I got to the bike to put on bike shoes. Long way from water to bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it worked out good.
Bike
  • 47m 14s
  • 5.28 miles
  • 6.71 mile/hr
Comments:

The start of the course was a lot of climbing and I felt blah on them. Was still passing people though. Once the faster sections and technical sections came I started passing more people. I ripped the singletrack and had only two bad spots that I was not aware of from not pre-riding. I loved this course and would put it in the top 5 of my all time favorite mtn bike courses. Did get stuck behind one guy in the last singletrack for a bit that I could have ridden faster.
What would you do differently?:

pre-ride the course early in the week and pass that one guy before that singletrack section.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Did not seperate out the times. I did take a swig of water going into the run that was sloshing around too much in my stomach and I puked in my mouth a tiny bit. The race was longer than last year (which I did not do) and I based my nutrition on those times. I should have taken a gel on the bike since they added about 20 minutes to the race.
What would you do differently?:

have a gel on me.
Run
  • 24m 18s
  • 2.49 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

My lack of running, especially trail running, showed today. I felt horrible on the run. I suffered through it for a good placing, but if I could have ran like I know I can I would have been on the podium.
What would you do differently?:

Avoid running injures so I could run harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Played in the pool with Bella and Noah.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition on the bike and poor running condition right now.

Event comments:

I will be back next year for sure. I like the off-road tri stuff better than the road so far (only 2 races to compare).
