Total Time = 2h 05m 59s
Overall Rank = 763/978
Age Group = W45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 6:15, had a PB&J and some Gatorade, then left around 6:50 with Kip. I was pretty tired - had birthday dinner (and margaritas) with Sherry and Tami the night before. Not the best pre-race regimen, but I was doing this one mostly just for fun.
Swim
  • 22m 13s
  • 500 yards
  • 04m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my worst swim since my first race - it seemed to take forever to reach the first buoy. The surf wasn't that bad, but I couldn't sight for anything and couldn't get my breathing right until turning past the last buoy on the way in. I guess the lack of swimming over the last several months mattered. I was VERY happy to get out of the water!
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Wasted a little time trying to get the sunscreen to spray out (the nozzle wasn't aligned). finally gave up
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the spray sunscreen nozzle is lined up before the race.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 53s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 16.24 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't race hard because I didn't want to fade at the end. There was some pretty strong headwind for part of the way. Took it at a nice steady pace. Toward the end I realized I didn't have my second GU - momentarily stunned, but didn't panic.
What would you do differently?:

Stash some GU on the bike, plus leave an extra at transition
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Wasted more time trying to get the sunscreen to work - it was plenty sunny and hot by now - but had to give up again
Run
  • 30m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran very relaxed, took it easy up the hill from transition. Drank at every opportunity. Didn't know my pace until I saw the 2 mile marker and was pleasantly surprised to see that I was keeping up with a 10 min pace (thought I was going much slower).
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Freaked out a little on the swim, fiddling with the sunscreen, hot, too light on the training

Event comments:

There is no water at the transition area, and it's a LONG hike up to the finish area. Remember to bring plenty of extra water before the race.

Way to finish the race despite a tough swim. I was in the same boat. I love this race but the logistics can be a little challenging if you need extra water or food.
