FYI...

The first Wise Tri Triathlon will take place on September 13, 2009 at beautiful Lake Bridgeport in Wise County. Wise Tri is a local charity event whose proceeds go directly towards research for treatment or a cure for Galactosemia.

Both sprint and olympic distance triathlons will be offered.

USAT Sanctioned event. (Near Decatur, TX)

Nothing against new races and I truly hope this one succeeds, but there are already 2 other races going on in the DFW area that same day.

Opportune time to throw in a plug.  Same weekend, but day before, our tri club will be hosting the Rose City Triathlon.  Voted SMW region's "Best Small Triathlon".  Great course, lots of support.

And, if you think you are fast, come on out and prove it.  Break the course record, and you'll take home a nice $250 cash prize!

Current record and record holders are:
Brady O'Bryan: 1:05:08
Gina Bolton: 1:17:55 -- my lovely wife!

Follow the link for details!  And feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

It's not "my" triathlon... I'm just putting the word out there. It's just near where I work. I would agree with the timing.

Wanna see something strange:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=33.281504,-97.851645&t=h&sll=33.28133...

This is right where the swim will be. What the hell is that vortex/drain/portal-to-another-galaxy/blackhole thing? I'd be worried about swimming out there!!!

Weird... but if you zoom out a couple of clicks, you'll see the lake is quite a bit larger than the specific area you're looking at. I'm sure the race organizers wouldn't be sending swimmers into a "blackhole!"

No need to set up any false paranoia...

Actually, according to the maps on the race website, this is the exact area the swim will be held.

Tim, you are just causing trouble now.

Anyways... what's wrong with a little whirlpool?

That's a lake version of a lazy river and also the warmup area.  If you look carefully you can see that it's spinning counterclockwise and will slingshot you ahead of the competetion in the Olympic swim course.

Actually it looks like it's 200 yds from the Olympic start area and not even close to the Sprint route.

Ah. Good call. Do you have any tips on how to practice the use of the whirlpool/slingshot to get maximum benefit?

Ha!!!

Whatever the thing is, I want to check it out in person. I'm intrigued.

The RD's for the race have put on a few sprints in the past.....in Decatur. They do a good job. It'll be interesting to see what they do with this one.....one on a bigger scale

Mike and Susie are both Ironman competitors so they know what a race should be. Prairieman was going to be my "A" race this year but took a month off due to a torn vagi......laziness, so I may be up for this one as a warm up for Longhorn.

I'll be there!  It will be my first race of the year, easing back into the race scene after my stress fracture.

Swam the Olympic distance course today... Sadly there was no slingshot or a blackhole. There was, however, a very intoxicated/ high individual that nearly drove his Explorer into the lake. His driver's side door was IN the water and it was ready to roll in! We found him someone to pull him out and a placed a call to the Sheriff's office to (hopefully) give him a ride home. Didn't realize I was going to get a workout and a show today!

sent my registration in yesterday - drove the bike course last week - roads look ok (?) after you get out of the chip-sealed park roads.

Should be fun - will be my first race in 2 or 3 years.

Lake Bridgeport (actually....Bridgeport) is my home town. There are some hills on the bike course, pretty deceiving just driving it.

And, regarding the intoxicated Explorer driver.....it's what we do.....there's nothing to do out there.

So how was the course, Shannon?  Did you get a chance to ride it?

The trail run could be interesting if this rain keeps up.  Maybe I should bring soccer cleats instead of running shoes.  The pics make it look there the run might be somewhat hilly too.

I rode it last sunday - the road into the park is really rough chip seal, once you get out on the other roads they are very nice - hilly, but smooth surface.  did I mention the hills?  they are going to be energy killers for sure.

I also ran the trail - it's nice but lots of turns and dips and ups and downs...yes it will be interesting if muddy - the surface is a nice chat, or fine cinder type gravel.  I don't expect either the bike or run to be extremely fast times compared to flat smooth type courses.  watch out on the run for some hard turns that you can't really see around, at least one of these - could be someone coming from the other way.

should be fun

Thanks for the info.  My first chance to see any of it will be Sat. afternoon.  Your description of the run makes we wonder if it was a mistake to put elastic laces in my shoes this week.  We'll see!
