Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 49/127
Pre-race routine:

I had just finished a 200 mile relay run race (Wild West Relay) just 18 hours earlier the day before. I ran a total of 34.4 miles in 2 days with no sleep so I was tired. My goal was to jsut finish and not DNF, I have never Dnf'ed a race and thought this may be my first! Just set up transition and talked to folks. ate a normal breakfast.
Event warmup:

None too sore and tired.
Swim
  • 39m 24s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I just had enough time to get to the swim beach before my wave went off so I had no time to warm up and that hurt me. Got to the first bouy and couldn't breathe so I had to breast stroke for about 3 minutes. I really thought my race was over. I just calmed down and began swimmingslowly again and got into a groove after the first far bouy turn. The swim was slow and I got kicked a few times today and my navigation was not great. Glad to be done with that.

Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Slow getting up the hill. I walked a bit at first but then managed a shuffle up to my spot. It was the farthest rack from the swim. I saw Dickdime coming in and knew I had a terrible swim.put my bike shoes on today instead of on the bike as my legs were fried and I don't think I could have done a flying mount.
What would you do differently?:

Not run 34.4 miles the day before.
Bike
  • 2h 47m 10s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Got on the bike and just started spinning to see if my legs had anything at all. They did not. I saw Kilodave come by me and he started 5 minutes behind me. Wished him well and he was gone. Then Dime came by me and I wished him well. Got up to Jay road which is a slight uphill for several miles. People were jsut going by me. I was just spinning and had nothing on the uphills. Caught some folks on the downhills which was nice.. Just kept spinning and my legs just plain hurt with every pedal stroke. I was contemplating calling it a day after the first loop by just kept going and spinning. The second loop was much better. The legs came around a bit and I was able to catch a few people that went by me.. Finished and was scared as hell about the run!

  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow I kept picking people off all day coming off the swim in 524th place and ended up 317 overall! Started as a shuffle and took very small steps. Legs were not moving real well but I had hope I guess. I really wanted to finish and knew I could since I was actually running. Walk the first couple aid stations to hydrate and check the legs. Was pretty happy that I was actually catching people. The legs came around by the second loop. Ran with Cristian on Bt here for a bit and then went on.
2nd lap I was picking up the pace. Legs were feeling better. Last 3 miles I really pushed to see if I could be under 5:20. Well almost got there and actually sprinted the last 2/10th of a mile. Very glad to be finished.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Nothing really. Drank some beer, sat around and talked to Bters and watch my wife finish her first 1/2 ever!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running 34.4 miles the day before, I think I already said that.

Event comments:

What a weekend.Congrats to Dime for placing 3rd in the agegroup, Cristian for Pr'ing, Kilodave for killing it and everyone else who toe'd the line!

Not a bad race at all considering what you did the day before. It's often difficult to fit in all the events, isn't it?

Nice work Dills! I can't imagine how the bike and/or run felt after the 34.4 miles the day before, but nice job on gutting it out and not DNF'ing.

Congratulations to Michelle too!

That's just crazy. After 30 something miles the two days prior, you still beat my run split BY FIVE MINUTES! Great demonstration of mental toughness.

Insane! What a back to back with the run the day before. If this doesn't say something about mental toughness I don't know what else would.

Good golly!  How do you do that?  How do you stay up all night running and then blast through the Long Course?  Amazing.  I've caught glimpses of you at a few races ... one day I will officially meet you!  Congrats on a great race.  Smile

Good work Dills! I can't imagine doing a 1/2 Iron after doing one of those get no sleep relays. I did one of those relays and it trashed me. Again... nice work!

Dude there are a ton of people that can not pull a 5:20 fully tapered! Awesome race man. When I saw you hobbling in transition before the race I was honestly a bit concerned, but damn man you had a killer weekend all together. Well done mate!
