Pre-race routine:

Well, I had already screwed up my race the day before, but didn't realize it. I've been eating a healthy, low fat diet for a couple of months now. No dairy except fat free yogurt and I think I've gotten a little lactose intolerant. Anyway, my girls (7 and 11) did the kids triathlon on Saturday. We celebrated with ice cream. Of course neither girl could finish theirs, so guess who did? Then I also ate Doritos and cheddar cheese throughout the day--none of this has been consumed by me for a very long time and although I felt fine at first...well, read on.

Race day: Didn't really sleep as this distance makes me too nervous. "Got up" at 4 a.m. and made "health nut" toast and egg beaters for breakfast. Got stuff ready, kissed little ladies goodbye, headed to Boulder Reservoir.
Event warmup:

Messing with bike. Chain fell off in the car. I got on and shifted in the parking lot and it fell off again. Found a piece of "string" around chain and pulled it out. Seemed to do the trick, but of course I was all concerned about it until after the ride. Waited about 15 minutes for a porta potty. Then hurried as we got kicked out of transition just as I got back from it.
Swim
  • 54m 12s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Maybe I'm faster without a wetsuit? I didn't wear one in Florida, I know my swimming has improved, so it's all I can think of for the slower time. Maybe I was sluggish due to upcoming GI issues, just not aware of it yet?
What would you do differently?:

Like I said, this is still a bit of a mystery :)
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Someday I have got to remember to put Glide on my ankles and feet! I always get a calf cramp trying to get my suit off because it sticks to my ankles/feet and if I point my toes too hard after swimming I cramp!
What would you do differently?:

Glide. Still, faster than Florida...
Bike
  • 3h 30m 29s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Couldn't seem to "go" at my race pace for very long. I expected a time of 3:15, or less, from training. On the 2nd loop I realized I was dealing with some GI issues. Started getting heartburn, and tasting those damn Doritos, and it hit me that I can't just eat whatever the hell I want the day before a race because "I'll burn the extra calories off tomorrow". Idiot. It gets worse...
What would you do differently?:

Better nutrition!
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

Started to run with bike into T2, but the acid coming up to my throat started making me want to puke. Saw hockey coach in transition area volunteering who came over to chit-chat with me. Nice guy, but between needing to transition and wanting to puke, I think I was maybe a little rude to him (didn't want to talk hockey at the time). I said "gotta run" and took off. Saw Beka66 as I started out.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat junk food the day before!
Run
  • 3h 12m 3s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I was nauseous by this point and could only slowly sip Gatorade. Too cold and it would want to come right back up. (My feet felt good, though!) Good thing I brought my hydration belt as I'd be running with a cup the entire time otherwise. Had to make a couple of porta potty stops, which helped as I felt like I was running with a big brick in my belly.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the junk food the day before.
Post race
Warm down:

Would have eaten if there was any food left. Massage tent was already taken down, too. So, I just showered, stretched, and fondled my medal. I guess it meant alot to finish because I seriously considered stopping after just one loop of the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heartburn, nausea, big fat belly full of junk food from yesterday.

Event comments:

I was disappointed that the food, massage tent, and many other expo tents were gone or being packed up when I finished. I was not even the last one to cross the finish line. There were still people coming in after I had showered. It seemed rude to me.

Otherwise, I feel good that I did the entire race as I really wanted to DNF after the first run loop. And somehow, it was a PR. Well, just because my only other 70.3 was at a time of the month where I needed many porta potty stops... I'm glad I'm getting all these mistakes out of the way now. I would hate to make them when my kids are off to college, I don't work full time, or whatever circumstances change to give me the time to train to be competitive. I would hate to put all that training in and then have something like my diet screw it all up if I had a chance of going to the podium!

I overswam the last side of the loop a little, otherwise I'm not sure why this is over 3 minutes slower than my swim time in the Florida half. Did feel a little tired.

Nice job of hanging tough and getting the PR. Hey, I have the same wetsuit as you. I swam in just the bottoms and it was the worst swim of my life BY FAR. I'm a good swimmer but the wetsuit made my legs float and forced my head down which was not only slow, it messed up my breathing so I was breathing water constantly. It was a nightmare and I know I would have been far faster without a wetsuit at all. Plus, I hate wetsuits anyway so it would have been much more enjoyable.

That sux about the stomach issues -- way to hang in there and get it done!!!  Bummed I never saw you!!

I passed a woman wearing long sleeves and tights and big hat on the run -- if it weren't for the fact that she was in all black I would have guessed she had lupus.  Seems the black would make the heat & sun much much worse.  I bought some expensive sunscreen the day before guaranteed to work 8 hours -- guess I shouldn't have put it on at 3:30 am!  I'm taking the time in T2 to reapply from now on.  Hope you didn't get too burnt!!!

Lots of pizza showed up in the food tent, probably after you left -- rats!

Congrats to your daughters, too, on their first tri!!

Way to stick with it and see it through. Sounds like you had a tough time, but it didn't kill you so will get you will be stronger, faster, and more knowledgeable.

Rule #1.

Nothing new on Race Day. Seems to apply to the day before as well.

Good Job!

The sun was tough to take, but I carry sunscreen in my trisuit and was reapplying during the bike and run.  (Learned the hard way with skin cancer...)  I have a nice tan, which isn't that great either, but thankfully no burning.

Since I couldn't push hard Sunday, I went and registered for the Rattlesnake Oly.  10 day forecast is for scattered thunderstorms   Hoping for the great weather we had last year, just minus the lightning!  (And I'm going to stick to my diet until AFTER the race!  LOL!)

AH, the lovely feeling that everyone has left the building by the time I cross the finish line---I'm very familiar...and you're right it does kinda feel "rude".  There was a woman that finished much later than we did, her time was ~9h 45m, I think, I really wonder what it looked/felt like for her?

I was right behind you lady!  Great race, even with GI issues, you did super!

Well, one thing I never do is anything different food wise a whole week before the race, but WOW Andria! Great job! Heartburn, nausea, big fat belly full of junk food and you still got a PR! FANTASTIC JOB GIRL! I'm very proud of you! Sorry I didn't see you on race day but at least I gotta see you guys the day before!

Every race is a learning experience. And the added bonus is your feet felt good and you didn't poop your tri shorts!

Well done. You get stronger every day.

Next time, remember, Lays go with Ice cream. Doritos go with pudding pops. Neither go with tris!
