Subject: MTB Training vs. Road Bike Training

I'd like to get some opinions on the following. I have a really nice trail very close to my house. It's got some (slightly) hilly sections, and it's just beautiful surroundings. It is, however mostly dirt/mud and gravel, and is pretty much a MTB only trail. I realize that riding the MTB won't help with my butt, or getting accustomed to aero position, and I will do road bike training at least once per week anyway. Will I obtain any benefit (other than some cardio) from riding the MTB, or is the geometry so different that nothing will really carry over? I have a feeling I would ride more often since the trail is so close, vs taking the road bike out to the trail, but if there's no real benefit...

The biggest problem with training on mtb trails is that the trail determines your effort, not you. It's very hard to keep a consistent HR and/or power output when you're going up and down steep hills and blazing twisty singletrack. Mountain biking can also beat you up a lot more than road riding if the trails are especially challenging.

I'm an avid mountain biker and do a considerable amount of my riding time on dirt. I've always found 'training' much easier to do on the road, though.

So mountain biking is definitely beneficial to your fitness, but if your goal is to be faster on the bike leg of a tri, you need to train often in circumstances that mimic the race.

Sorry I can't offer much input but I will say that you'll build leg strength riding that MTB in the mud!

Have fun,
Rob

I got out my MTB to ride to work on (a whole 6 miles). I figured the added resistance and the option to ride some of the riverbank trails alongside the paved path would be fun. IMHO, any time on the bike pedalling is training time. I figure that with the bike, because it's less about technique, it's the time on the saddle that counts.

Thankfully the trail isn't very technical--it's meant to be a hike/bike type trail. It ends inside a local park that has some crazy hills which I can choose to do or not depending on the workout I'm aiming for.

Leg strength is probably the biggest thing right now. I'm thinking if I currently will ride 2 or 3 times on the road bike, I may be able to go to riding 5 times a week, with 2 or 3 MTB rides to help build leg strength.

As an aside, I ride clipless pedals on the buzz (my road bike). Would there be much benefit in picking up a set of MTB pedals/shoes for the crappy Canadian Tire MTB?
