Swim
Comments: 67 degrees is some cold water. I handled it well. My feet were numb after about 3 minutes, so they turned out not to be a problem. It felt good to catch up to folks from one or two waves ahead of me. I found that getting bumped around was no big deal. This was my first OW swim, I think I like it. The water at White Lake is simply exquisite. It is crystal clear, despite rain the two days before the and shallow (9 ft. max) I could see other swimmers around me, and the anchors holding the bouys to the bottom. Getting out on the dock fro T1 was weird, I was really dizzy. It felt like someone was rocking the dock, then I hei the beach and it felt like someone was rocking the beach too. What would you do differently?: I think I could have concentrated more on my form and stretched the glide of my stroke out a bit more. All in all though, I met my goal of getting through the swim intact and relatively unscathed. Transition 1
Comments: no worries here. I did have a little struggle with getting my jersey on. I chose to wear a long sleeved regular bike jersey because it was only 60 degrees when we started the swim. Putting on any shirt while wet is a pain. Bike
Comments: I passed a lot of folks on the bike. I was the second bike back on my rack. this was my kind of course flat and fast. I was right at home. Transition 2
Comments: No worries here either What would you do differently?: set up my race belt better Run
Comments: It all went straight in the crapper here. My first mile was a great 8:42 and I was estatic, but it was short-lived. Mile 2 was 10:33 and it went downhill from there. I walked, I shuffled, I limped, I almost cried, I almost puked. At one point we were running through a subdivision and a 8-9 yr-old girl was riding her Razor scooter up and down the road. A woman who was passing me (one of many) said " I see you, you're thinking about knocking her over and taking her scooter". I told her " I don't think I CAN knock her over right now". What would you do differently?: Much more run volume in training. Post race
Warm down: stood in the cold water of the lake to get my legs to stop swelling. Spent 3 days at the beach eating. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough run volume. Last updated: 2005-05-11 12:00 AM

Tried to stay warm in the 42 degree morning. Got chipped and marked while trying to keep as many clothes on as possible. Laid out transition area. got nervous, snappy, and developed my usual pre-race surly and neurotic disposition. My wife is a long-suffering soul.
I did not really do any warm up. I figured that I would have plenty of time to get warmed-up during the race. For the swim, I did force myself to put my head under the water and swim a tiny bit becaust the water was so cold.
