Noticed the other day that the Rochester Hills Lifetime Fitness has a masters class. The coach-on deck is Kristen Johnson, an All-American collegiate swimmer and multiple-time Kona finisher, who recently relocated here from North Carolina.  I went to the workout tonight to learn a little more...she's awesome.

The program - as it stands today - is $35/mo, on par with the West Bloomfield masters cost and a helluva lot cheaper than the Oakland U masters cost.  I'm working with her to get a 'pay-as-you-go' plan as pay-by-the-month doesn't really work out for me with my travel schedule.  Think punch-card.

They meet M, W nights at the LTF Rochester from 7:30-8:30. Tonight's workout (which I watched) was a solid 2400, with the option to go longer PLUS different time goals for the A+, A, and B lanes.

If anyone wants to join me Wednesday 7:30-8:30, I'll be at LTF to try the swim out. No cost for the first workout or two until you figure out if you like it.

Last thing...I asked if she'd be willing to do a group session with underwater video cam for a group and do stroke analysis, and she thought that'd be awesome. Just trying to figure out interest at this point, let me know.

That is to far for me and I work third shift anyways.  However I would be interested in the underwater video.  Knowing I need work and actually knowing what to work on would be worth taking a day off work for me.

Wish Rochester wasn't such a haul for me, the Canton masters class is kinda of a joke with no real instruction.  It's basically set up as here's your workout go swim.

If there's something else set up with her I'm sure Karen and I would be interested provided our crazy work schedules didn't get in the way.

Too far for me too, but I would be very interested in the underwater video.  For that I'd make the trek.

I would also be up for the underwater cam and stroke analysis. Rochester Hills is also to far for me for the masters class. We need someone like Kristen out at the Canton LTF.

Rick,

I would be down to check it out. I workout at the Troy location and I have been to their masters class which I didn't find very useful. The punch-card would be a great idea as I have a sometimes unpredictable work schedule as well. I was supposed to do a workout with a buddy tomorrow so if I can reschedule that I will be there to check it out.

Talk to you soon,

Dan

Dan, I can't make tomorrow....I'm now set on next Monday. Feel free to drop in anyway, she's a shorter blonde gal and super personable. Post whatever comments you get back here, otherwise, I'll share what I lear next Monday.

K, yes, you need a LTF membership. I can guest you in 2x/month, if you'd like.

Interesting...

I've been involved with the Troy Masters class for sometime, and have been recently swimming in the outdoor lanes on the weekends (I live about 5 minutes from Rochester LTF).

I'd be very interested in attending a stroke analysis session there... how does she instruct?  The Coach at Troy was an Olympic swimmer, and he got me swimming from one lap to 500 mts sets.

I don't know how she instructs. I'll find out Monday night...I'm going to drop in on the masters swim and get more detail.

And if you could, can you post the Troy LTF schedule and sample workouts?  I didn't even know that Troy LTF had a masters....be interested to see if that gives me more timing options, too....

Rick,

During the summer its 6:30 - 7:30pm Monday and Wednesday.

The class has folks from a gal who can only go 1 length to a guy who used to swim on a high school team who is pretty fast.

I used to go to class once a week and found most workouts were about 1250 to 1800 meters.  I was never consistant in my attendance, so I didn't improve a lot.  I may meet you Monday for the drop in class.  I'd love extra input from a triathlete swimmer.  If I don't see you there, I'd love to read your feedback!

Also, I don't think you need to be a LTF member to join in the class...it just costs a bit more.  Not positive on that, though.

You do need to be a member. I checked this because it is the only reason I keep a membership.  Other than this I don't like the gym.

Actually, in the Troy LTF class there was a lane that swam 1:40/100m and would get in 2000-2200m for their workout.   Lots of speed work in that lane.  Some work on form and speed for the intermediate lane which swam 2:00-2:40/100m for a total of 1600-1800/class.  Beginners lane because the coach loves to teach.  They do 500-800m/class.  It helped me a lot but I started as a beginner who could not breath with my head in the water.  One of the guys in the class was planning on 20 sprint/oly/HIM tri's this season, and is training for an IM.  Most of the rest do sprint tri's or olympics.  We have had a couple of people who have completed an ironman join us, but only occasionally.  Attendance really drops off in the summer because of all the OWS opportunities.  The coach has met the man training for the ironman out at the lake to do OWS training with him and he tailors to the needs of the class.  Occasionally I have emailed him my planned workout and he will tailor the class for me around the goal I have set.  I am still in that 2:20-2:40/100m range and am very slow.

It sounds like the Rochester class might be better for people who are faster or could handle more.  I think that I might be too slow for something like you are describing.
