How do you know when to replace your running shoes? Is there a mileage or a certain number of hours? Or is it by feel? I'm guessing it should be miles, since hours can be variable and feel can dwindle without you really realizing it.Any thoughts?

It can depend on many factors, but 500miles/6 months is what I usually go by.  When I get my new running shoes I write on the side of them with a sharpie the date that I started wearing them.

I generally replace after 300 miles. I track my equipment use here on BT via my training log. I think that's an upgrade if you pay to be a member.

Sharpie works too though.

KSH - I'm using this site as well to track my equipment, and I got a message today saying that my shoes are nearing replacement, but I only have about 75 miles on them... that's what sparked this questions. Thanks for your input, I think i'll go with the 300 mile mark, sounds good.

I can't go past 300 miles in mine.  They say 300-500 but as I near that 300 I find that my knees/ankles bother me just a bit then off to the store I go.

Around the 300 mark works for me, too.  My knees start to hurt.

300 miles is too long for me.  I start to get a feeling that my feet aren't well supported after only 150 or so miles.  Now, I rotate shoes a LOT so that 150 miles might take several months.

So, what I do is track the miles, but pay more attention to feel/look and how long I have had the shoe.  I just start to KNOW after awhile...might be in the form that after I wear a certain pair of shoes my PF hurts more.  Or when I wear a particular pair my ankles hurt more.  That sort of stuff.  And I have noticed that those sort of pains start to creep up the bottoms of the shoes start to look pretty worn and I've owned them for 3-4 months even if they only have 100-150 miles on them.

You want to check what miles you put in for when the equipment is due to be replaced. Maybe you have 100 miles entered?

Heavier athletes should look at replacing shoes a bit sooner. I'm a Clyde and I start thinking about new shoes at the 150 mile mark.
