bryancd - 2009-08-15 8:37 PM Don't get hung up on people who may respond with comments like what's "what's a recovery day!" or throw huge volume numbers around. It doesn't always make them faster, it often just makes them tired.

Very, very well said.  excellent point.

Friday, it's the only day I have to be in the office when the rest of the time I work from home and schedule my own hours.  Usually try to make Thursday a hard day.  However, if I'm feeling tired, I'll have a rest day and often, life just gets in the way and there's extra recovery.

TriToy - 2009-08-15 7:31 PM rest day?
..and these.

I take them when I need one - if you look at my logs they are there....they are just usually not scheduled in - or even if they are sometimes things get moved around because life happens.

But to say just ignore people who don't take one is silly.  The advantage of our having 3 sports, 2 of them non impact, is that rest days are not mandatory.

No they certainly aren't mandatory and I explained that it's very much dependent upon the individual total weekly workload and the fitness of the athlete as to their efficacy. However, by just responding as you did doesn't allow for that and it's better to be more clear when we discuss training protocols such as recovery, which is important.

I do my best to make my rest day Saturday or Sunday so that I have one day that I am 100% off from training AND work to spend with my family (hubby and 2 little boys).  I am logging what I consider to be significant hours (15 this week) and have been able to make this work by doing my long runs in the morning before work.

With that said, it hasn't happened yet (knock on wood), but I do pay attention to how I feel and would take another day if my body told me to.

My brother and I have the honor system...you get two days a week off.  The other 5 days you must work out.  Here are the rules.

1.  If you take a third day off, it will cost you $5, cash, put in an envelope.
2.  Sickness counts only in extreme circumstances...(e.g. broken limb, hospital stay, swine flu)
3.  Week starts on Monday ends on Sunday.
4.  At the end of the month, the one with more missed days has to hand over his envelope to the other.

We rely on the notion that neither of us could stand to hand over the money to the other. So far we've been pretty good about it....I thank the lord for my bicycle trainer though b/c late at night after kids are in bed etc, I still have an outlet to knock it out.

Being that I'm new to tris, I'm not sure I do enough to warrant a recovery day.  Instead, if I feel that my legs are experiencing soreness or fatigue, I may switch up a run or bike for a swim to give my legs a break.  Otherwise, my vacation was the only time I have had time off that I can recall and I felt horrible about it.

Keep in mind that my max swims thus far have been 1 mile, max bikes have been around 30, and max runs have been around 6 mile so that's why I'm not certain that not taking an entire recovery day is necessary for me.

I like the idea that someone mentioned earlier concerning active recovery via lighter intensity days.  Those are enjoyable.

Friday.

That way I don't workout late Friday night and then have to get up Saturday morning to workout again.

Mine are not scheduled per se...I generally follow a training program..but sometimes if I am just feeling tired or blah (unmotivated) I think it is better to bump up my rest day (or just add one) rather than completing a training session. I think if I am tired or unmotivated that it is better to not do the workout because my focus isn't fully there and I might do something to injure, increase fatigue, impair technique..etc.etc.

Sometimes my rest days are just easy rides or swims though...not a full day off with nothing...
