Subject: Desoto 400 mile bike shorts as tri shorts?

Anyone here wear these during their IM and do the entire race in them?  Any reviews?

I know this topic could be in several other forums, but I am specifically interested in the IM distance use.  Thanks!

I did last year in IM Louisville. I have also worn them in a few shorter tris this year and will be wearing them in my 1/2 in a few weeks. I quite like them and find them very comfortable to run in.

I would suggest doing a couple long runs in them first, to be sure you like them, but they sure work well for me.

I wore my 400 mile shorts from start to finish during IMLP and they chafed me something fierce, but I didn't realize it until I took a shower after the race. I wore them several times during training and ran up to 20 miles in them with no problems. I think the difference for me during the IM was that I peed about 7 times while on the bike and didn't get off the bike once. I had asked the same question as you about doubling up shorts and had mixed reactions so I stayed with the Desotos the whole race. They felt fine during he run and I had no idea the pad was rubbing my inner thighs raw. I coated myself with Chaois Butt'r before the swim, applied a little more before the bike, but did not apply any for the run.

I've run in mine for over 3 hours, swam in mine, biked in them a lot and found them to be great.

I had planned on wearing them throughout my IM but the post above and his race report made me wonder.

Today I swam for an hour and then ran for just over 30'. They were still wet at end of the run. I found as I drove home the legs dried slowest but pad was still wet when I took them off some 1.5 hours after I swam. So I'm thinking about it.

My IM is in 15 days so I need to decide soon. I have 16 mile run this week maybe I'll put them on wet and do two 8 mile loops see if it chafs. Either way I'm putting a second pair of shorts in my T2 bag. I'll be peeing on my bike so would be nice to have clean pair of somthing if I opt that way in T2. Changing takes time though.

So, do you plan to do the swim and bike in them for sure?  No chaffing on the bike, right?  That is why I am looking into these shorts as my 2XU shorts are not as comfy as I would like for rides over 60 miles or so.  I am leaning into changing into running shorts in T2-- I could do it fairly quickly, I think.

That's the plan swim/bike for sure in them. Not sure about the run.

Anne, you keep asking good newbie IM questions, thanks!

I used an older version of the 400 mile shorts last year for my HIM and did plenty of runs in them after short OWS and rides and never had any issues for the HIM distance and at Muncie 2008 we had a ton of rain and then sun for the last half of the run and the shorts felt fine.

That being said DeSoto has changed the pad and I haven't done much running in the newer version of the 400 mile short just rides so I'm not sure how that pad will work in the end.

I have been using Oomph Lava Tri shorts and have been real happy with them in my shorter tri's this year and my long rides.  The century I did in July had pouring rains for the first 20 miles and I didn't have any issues in the remaining 80 miles which were dry and sunny or my short brick run.  My long runs are bumping up to 2 hours next week and I'll be wearing these on occasion to see how they workout as I'm still trying to figure out what to do about changing clothes in T1 and T2.

I did the Wildflower long course (70.3) in 2008 DeSoto 400s.   They were fine.  For IMLP, however, I wore them only for the swim and bike and then changed into run shorts in T2.  Great choice -- total comfort all day, no chafing on bike or run, and the finisher pictures are cuter!

I like the fit and the lack of elastic on the DeSotos. DeSoto is not making the 400s in XS any more, though, so I am in the market for something new for next year.

Thanks!  I am in total execution mode now that I am trying to put together my race plan for FL ... scary that FL is close enough for me to be thinking about the finer details of race day!

I wouldn't mind another pair of tri shorts, so I might try these out just for fun.

irondreams, I hope you don't mind if I slightly hijack your thread since it's been dead for several days.

Does anyone else have issues with the seams in the crotch of these shorts?  There's that little bump I guess is the right word where the 2 seams come together.  It really starts to irritate my lady areas after I've been on the bike for 20 miles or so.  Do you think I'll just get used to this?

I have the De SOto's with the 4 pockets (in avatar).  I wear them every weekend for the long ride x 2...wash in cold water, let dry on top of dryer.  I ran a marathon in them with no issues...in fact they are my new marathon shorts for sure.

On the bike they feel great, actually better than my cycling bib.  SOmething about the bib in aero casues a bit of chaffing that I don't experience when riding the road bike with the bib.  SO I go bib on radie, De Soto's on the TT>

Im a proud owner of DeSoto 400 and Assos bibs and will probably switch into the Assos after the swim. They are both good, but I prefer the Assos.

I'm no speed merchant so I am going to switch into the bib after the swim. Probably will swim in a 2xu tri shorts underneath my wetsuit for IMAZ, switch into the Assos bib, then switch into some black running shorts.

I'm not going to KONA in 2010, just back to my life after. I prefer to go with whatever feels the best. The switching of shorts seems the best way to accomplish that.

Just to let share that my Desoto 400 mile bike shorts worked well for me in my IM just a little chaffing in one spot but no monkey butt like someone reported.

I did not pee in them on the bike as I was dehydrated but did some on the run with no issues.

When I get back to MA, I'll post a clever little thing I did by sewing velcro onto them to make them have a built in race belt that worked great under my fuel belt.
