Asbury Park, New Jersey

Jersey Shore Multi Sport
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 07m 31s
Overall Rank = 45/156
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/7
Pre-race routine:

Surprising good night sleep, woke fresh, had begal, ensure and bananna. Drank Gu20 and 15 minutes before swim had one gel. Live local, so 10 minute drive. Free parking by transition was nice. Set up transition. Checked out sunrise, came back to transition and someone decided to rack so close the bike horns were tangled. WTF? I was at the end, where else can I move? Put on wetsuit and tried to move bike more.
Event warmup:

In water start, so swim to start was warmup.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Well marked.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

T1 time was slow since my bike was hard to get off rack due to my fellow competitor's lack of sense. (He also had a crate to sit on...)
Bike
  • 31m 59s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 21.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Too hard on the bike, again. Tried to train harder on the bike to match race pace, but over did it. Something about being on a bike and hunting down the rider in front regardless of AG! Knew my HR and cadence was too high but figured it was a sprint, right. I know, plan your race and race your plan.
My wife was there with her encouragement. Each lap there was more cheering, nice!
What would you do differently?:

DUH, plan my race and race my plan, train harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Since my neighbor was still on the bike, had room for transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 24m 49s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good. No idea of pace. Garmin is on bike and missed first mile marker. Sun was getting hot. Run through Casino and Convention Center was nice.
What would you do differently?:

Need to run sub 8. Either ease off the bike or train harder on the bike and run.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice cold wet towels waiting at finish. Excellent surprise. Jersey Shore Tri had tent with extra fluids and food. Catered breakfast barrito was good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not racing my plan.

Event comments:

I know it was first event, so there are some bugs. Needed better traffic control and maybe more racks in transition. Otherwise a great event, nice location, will do it again. Chris and his organisation deserve a lot of credit.
