Swim
Comments: I usually start out slow, have a slow middle portion, and finish pretty slowly. This time I went out a little faster than usual (considering I've only swam 7 times all year) and I did just fine. I tried drafting off a dude who was faster than I am, but his navigation sucked so I just abandoned it. What would you do differently?: Learn how to follow someone and draft off of them. Transition 1
Comments: It took a little too long to get my wetsuit off and my shirt on. It was a good idea to bring sunscreen that is a spray-on. What would you do differently?: I needed to practice a little just to get used to all of the stuff I bring on a HIM. I spent too much time saying, "Oh, I forgot xxxx". Even though I grouped everything together at my bike, I seemed to keep surprising myself that I needed more stuff. Bike
Comments: I used Cathy's race wheels which seemed to help a bit. I was able to rest my legs on the downhills without losing any speed; usually I keep pedaling. My left knee started hurting me at the start of the 2nd lap, but it went away; also my stomach started bugging me during the second lap, but it went away too. What would you do differently?: Do more speed work in training; I don't push myself hard enough when biking. Nutrition went well this year - I ate 4 Sweet and Salty bars, drank 65 oz of Acceleraide and about 24 oz of water; and had 10 Clif shot blocks. Transition 2
Comments: It felt like I got through T2 faster than that. It probably set me back about 1 min with the potty break, but it still didn't seem like 3 min otherwise. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure - everything seemed to go pretty well considering my legs and arse were pretty darn sore from the bike. Run
Comments: My stomach was on the edge of shutting down for most of the run, but it stayed OK the entire time. I drank Gatoraide almost the entire time and threw in some water at 2 of the aid stations. I was able to continue taking in fluids the entire time, so that's a pleasant change. I think it was because it was cooler this year compared to most others. What would you do differently?: Nothing - the run went well this year. Because I was able to keep taking in fluids, I was able to keep running. Also, my knees didn't bother me much at all. Post race
Warm down: Stop running. Drink water. Celebrate! What limited your ability to perform faster: Genetics and lack of training. I don't know if I could or would do anything differently next time, but I lost about 16 lbs of fluids during the race and only took in about 9. Last updated: 2009-08-17 12:00 AM

My in-laws had the kids, so I actually got to sleep at a decent time the night before. The day of the race, Cathy and I were driving to the race and some dude on a bike with a race number was riding toward the race also. Since we were still about 9 mi from the rez, we stopped and offered him a ride; and he accepted. That slowed us down a bit and I got to the transition area about 10 min before it closed.
Since I got there late, I didn't have time for a warm up other than dancing around in the LONG port-a-john line.
I got into the water 3 min before my wave started and I did just a few seconds of swimming.
