Subject: disintegrating swimsuits

Discovered this morning that I was once again swimming in a suit with an entirely see-through back! I felt like I was always replacing my swim suits, so I decided to track mine this time, and it has lasted almost 4 months, approx 34 hrs of pool swimming.  Is that the best I can expect? How long does your swimsuit last?  This one was a TYR (78% polyamide & 22% spandex) and I also use Speedos, but don't think they last any longer. I always rinse it off afterwards (warm water in the shower .. would cold water really make a difference?) and hang it to dry.

Any suggestions on other brands or material blends - or am I just being unrealistic to expect a swimsuit to last longer?

I bought a "speedo endurance" suit - they are supposed to hold up better

eta: make sure you rinse out your suits well after you swim in chlorine !

No spandex/lycra.  Use 100% polyester.  Lasts for years.

Polyester suits hold up better.  You can get a cute Dolfin Uglies suit from swimoutlet.com for $30.  I've heard good things about them and had mine for a month - so far so good.

X2 on the polyester suits. I quickly went through a couple suits at first until I started using poly suits and they seem to go forever. They do eventually get thinner though, so you should still check now and then.

Thanks for the info & links  - I"ll  replace this one with a pure polyester swimsuit.  lol guess I had better get a colour I like it if it's going to be around for years!

I think the bigger question is, why can't I have hotties with see-through bathing suits, swim at my pool.  LOL

I bought my TYR nylon/spandex about the same time I bought my Speedo Endurance (polyester). The Speedo is still like new. The TYR started disintegrating last year.

When I swam in HS, I would usually go through one practice suit a month. Usually we would wear at least two suits while training, with the oldest and most worn on the outside. This would insure that any see-through spots on the first suit underneath were covered and the second suit would provide extra drag during training. Our race suits were only worn for meets.

I got tired of buying new swimsuits every few months, so I switched to polyester.  This is the one I use.  Polyester and low-maintenance, if you catch my drift, ladies.   Wink

Do yourself a favor and don't buy a 100% polyester suit.  Look at the fabric makeup and get one that's a polyester/PBT blend (50/50 60/40 etc)  PBT is also a type of polyester but has much more stretch than normal polyester, though supposedly slightly less clorine resistant.  Makes the suit feel much more lycra-like.  Speedo endurance is 60/40 poly/PBT and are the suits I use and haven't worn one out yet.  There are other brands, name and house, that also use PBT.

Two rules jammers:

1.  Buy cheap/replace often

2.  Never, ever buy white jammers!  (unless  you are an exbibitionist)

I am so glad I found this thread. I just had a tyr disintegrate on me after 6 months. I about died when I looked in the mirror and realized I was about to give the world a peep show!

100% polyester.  Wears forever.  You will be sick of it long before it wears out.

Wow...great to know about the polyester suits...I had no idea. I'm in the same boat with two paper thin suits and wondering if my suits were just cheap or if this is always a problem. I'm checking out the polyester.

Great to know there are a few options out there for suits that will last longer - will look at the polyester/PBT blends as well - thanks for all the feedback!

I'll Xwhatever the poly blend suits...

I had my Speed Endurance Jammers for almost 2 years before I destroyed them. Keep in mind that I also swam, ran and played Ultimate Frisbee in them, so I was pretty impressed. BTW, they didn't wear out, I actually ripped them, so I can't really blame them for giving up

It's never too late, but I'm surprised it took 'til page 2.

My wife told me I was flashing this week, so I order new Poly suits today. Can't wait to see if I notice a difference from Lycra.
