Love all the banter out there!!! So, I just arrived to Montauk and realized that I left my running and biking shoes in CT. Yes, I'm a moron. Nothing went well this morning with family, etc. visiting and getting in the way. Anyway, so I'm trying to decide if I'm better off getting new gear and dealing with the pain that comes as a result or jumping in the car and dealing with the pain of driving home and back. I was leaning toward new gear and therefore went to the local bike and sport shop in Montauk and they didn't have my sizes, etc. Do any of you have shop recommendations? For running and biking shoes?

If it were me, I'd go back to CT and get my stuff... a much better option than using new/uncomfortable stuff in my opinion.

Where in CT do you live?  You can just drive to Sag Harbor (27 west to 114) take the ferry to Shelter Island, go across and take the ferry to greenport... from there it's a quick drive to orient point and the cross sound ferry.  Maybe you could have someone meet you with your stuff in New London so you wouldn't have to bring/pay for your car on the ferry going to NL, CT.

I would buy new stuff!!  The gas money alone to get to CT and back will cover about half of what you're gonna spend.  I don't know what tri shops are out at Montauk.  Perhaps e-mail the Race Director, Vicki, and she can point you in the right direction; otherwise I'm sure some of the vendors at the Expo (if you can call it that ) will have running shoes and cylcling shoes.

Mike, thanks for the elevations.  They are proof that this really is a very flat course.  Or atleast 95% of it it flat

not that i am complaining, but where do they get 2200 feet of elevation gain in that???  even doing it twice???  I love a small climb and roller course though, i just hope the sun is out so i can see the pretty sights!!!

The first time I laid eyes on the Montauk Lighthouse was while riding this bike course in a Race.... it was Magical to say the least.  So damn picturesque.

When I left home at 0515 this morning, the temp gauge on my car said 38 degrees and didn't climb much by the time I got to work an hour later.   It ain't gonna be that much warmer when the gun goes off Sunday, so bring your mittens!

My plan is to be sooo fast, that's I'm smokin' hot.  This way I won't get cold

Here's what Charlie (lunchbox) wore at last year's race:

He he.  Nobody better kill Kenny this year!

I'll be sporting long sleeves on the bike, and probably toe caps on my (well vented) bike shoes.  Tri top will be under the shirt, so I'll peel that off if it gets warm.

So do you recommend long-sleeved wetsuit, or sleeveless? Assuming long sleeved...

Also - Long dri-fit race shirt for the bike that I can take off over short sleeve dri-fit race shirt for the run?

Sorry - first non-summer Triathlon... A little nervous...

Last year I had the tri shirt on underneath a long sleeve dri-fit.  Due to the chill from the rain, I left the long sleeves on the entire time, though I planned to shed it if I got warm.

It worked well for me.  You can always take it off, but you can't go shopping on the course for something you left behind!

I only have a long-sleeved.  And believe it or not, the water will be warm.  I swam in the Long Island sound with Charlie Lunchbox last weekend, and the temps were awesome!  It was warmer in the water than the outside air.  Remember that the waters are warmed all summer and are now at there warmest.  For this very same reason the temps out in Montauk have on average been 10 degrees warmer than central Long Island, because Montauk is surrounded closely by waters that are warming it up.  As long as the sun comes out Sunday, I don't believe the cold will be a factor after 9 AM.  So figure a little over an hour on the bike.  If it's cloudy, yeah it make get chilly.  But as far as the swim goes, you will be fine with either a sleeveless or full sleeve.
