Next year I am looking to do my first Oly and first HIM.  Is six weeks enough time between the two races?

I'm curious to see the answers!  I just completed my first Oly on Sunday and am considering going with a HIM in early November this year. So that would be more like 10/11 weeks, but I'd be in roughly the same boat.

For what it's worth, I just did my first run since the Oly two days ago.  Four miler...total struggle.  Hoping it doesn't stay that way over the next week/two.  My guess would be that if you totally tax yourself (which I did, not enough training hours) you could be in trouble.

However, a lot training plans have an Oly in them somewhere around 4/6/8 weeks out if I remember correctly as a sort of dry run.

If you follow a HIM training plan you'll have no trouble throwing an oly in the middle and it shouldn't take more than a week to recover from the oly.  If you follow an oly plan, however, you may not be able to increase your mileage in time for the HIM.

I was following a 20 week HIM plan this year and I ran an Oly 6 weeks before the HIM and it was fine. I pushed pretty hard in the Oly and I found the recovery to be very quick.

just an FYI.

i finished 16 week oly plan and started 12 week HIM bridge.  my oly will take place 9/27 and my HIM 11/08.

I see no reason why you need more then 1 week to recover.  if anything take 2 days off from your schedule after the race and just stretch properly.

Heck, yes.  I did my first full Oly (did an "international distance" race earlier) three weeks before my first HIM.  Both of them went great.

Provided you do the necessary training it should be no problem. If you screw around and train in a half azzed manner you could struggle in both races.

FWIW, I did a HIM 4 weeks after an oly this year. In between I did a sprint, a 10K, and 2 aquathons (Splash & Dash). None of them were any problem. I took a day off after the HIM, then did a 9 mile run the following day. I'm able to do this because I have a huge base and generally train at a higher volume - and I'm 53 if that matters.

Depends on your base level of fitness, how well you recover, and how hard you race.  I just raced a HIM on Sunday and this was 2 weeks after I set an Oly PR.  I didn't feel any lingering effects from the previous race, but then again I can generally recover from an Oly in a day or 2.

If you really want to race both, as long as you have 2 weeks between them I'd say you're fine.

as long as you are training for a HIM, an oly will be no problem.  I did an oly three weeks before my HIM this year and treated it like a brick workout with no recovery afterwards.
