Although I am a slow swimmer, biker and runner, I think that I kick butt in transition.  What is your average for the total of both transitions in a non-wetsuit tri?  I'm around 3:15.

I have only done wetsuit tris, but have thus far been biking in my running shoes.  My average is right about 3:15, an area I want to improve on.

I definitely treat the transitions as part of the race.  Its my only hope to make up some time from my slow swim.    I don't think you can compare T times between races b/c each race is set up so different.  Some have a rather lengthy distance from the lake to the transition area.  A friend of mine just did a tri and it was over .3 miles from the water to the transition.  The race organizers even had an area for people to leave shoes by the waters edge to get to the transition.

I went 2:40 in my only tri, with a wetsuit.  That said, it completely depends on the transition area itself.  How big an area (basically, how many athletes in the race)?  How far a run from the swim to T1, and from the bike entrance to the run exit?  In my first tri there were just under 500 racers total so it was a small transition area and the run from the swim to transition was no more than 75 m.

All that said, I'm of the opinion that I'm sure you are: transitions are a big part of the race, especially in the shorter distances.

Depends on the size of the race.  I was 55 seconds combined in the last sprint I did.  I'd say on average though I'm 1:30 to 2:00

Depends on the size of the race.

Depends on the distance from the timing mats to my rack.

Why not compare yourself to others in the agegroup who are usually racked near you?  I average around 1:30 and my times are usually top 5 in the agegroup and overall. Practice practice practice!

Here is my spin on calculating actual transition time.

I count my swim time (time in the water) as the swim.  I hit my watch and my T1 time starts as soon as I am on dry land.  Sometimes the the T1 transition area is 75 or 100 yards away from the water.

Same with the bike, my bike time starts as soon as I am in the saddle peddling.  If I am pushing my bike, or doing something other than riding, I consider myself in T2.

The reason I do this is because I can better calculate my segment times based on my average speed swimming, biking and running.  Then I calculate the approximate time between each segment to the actual transition area and add in 0:1:40 for T1 & 0:1:00 for T2.

Anyway, that s what I do.

I did a combined 14 minute transition time in a sprint earlier this year, with 8:33 in T1 after a swim of 7:41.

Beat that!

I had to go read your race report before I asked... that's a heck of a T1.

Anyway my total transition times are in the 3 - 4 minutes range.  Wrestling on a top in T1, putting on socks and tieing shoes in T2 being my largest time consumers.  My next race I'm going to try and cut that in half.

agreed.  hilarious RR.  to OP, my transition times are typically ~2min, but never had huge distances to cover after swim or surrounding T2.

I cannot answer, as my Garmin does not have calendar mode.

I just looked, and clearly it depends on circumstances -- mostly length of race and length of run into T1.  I've been down around 1:30, but also up closer to 5:00 in my HIM.  If I could somehow remember not to worry about putting on my race belt until I've started running, I could take 5s off of that...

last spring was 26 total combined between the two, last half was 1:48 total between the two.

race setup has a lot to do with how fast you can go though.
