My former mother-in-law used to say the lottery was one of the hands-down best-bang-for-the-buck entertainment: $2, $5 or whatever for HOURS and HOURS of dreaming, wondering, scheming, planning, generally just having a great time playing around. Go to a movie and you spend upwards of $20/person for two hours of someone else's dream! It's great!

Maybe a tri/TT bike and a cyclocross bike. I don't think I'd trade my current bike, but it always helps to have a few more.

Also, I'd buy the local velodrome. Right now it's owned by a volleyball association and we can only ride on it at the times & rules that they set.

I'd retire and do bike tours all over the world along with a photographic travel blog.

bel83 - 2009-08-19 11:53 PM One lump sum or would you take it in instalments? Personally I would go with the installments, pay off the car and my student loans. then go buy a house with a large chunk of land. After that I would start getting a few toys here and there but mostly it would allow me TIME to train. Most of the money would go towards charity and investments outside of standard living wages. I would also use it to go BACK to university and get my PhD in Biological oceanography and/or master in teaching.

Oh and the house would have a seperate mother in law unit for my mom to move in to and maybe a second mother in law unit for my wifes parents to move into once they retire

I would determine first what interest rate they are calculating the net present value of the lump sum and factor in future tax increases before making a quick decision on that.  Then I would put it away and budget based off of living strictly off of the interest.  With zero debt, that shouldn't be too difficult to do.  I would then buy toys but only after I saved up my hard earned interest money.

That has to be one of the top 10 quotes from that movie.  I still use "I wouldn't exactly say I was missing work."
