Hello,

I just need a short answear for my question. Concerning my continous active style of life (marathons, cycling etc.) am I able to cross the finish line of the Full IM at the end of June 2010?
Thans a lot.

I don't see why not ... but a whole year of intensive training may likely cause you to burn out mentally and physically.   It sounds like you have the base to start training for the two longest legs of the IM.  If you know how to swim, the ramp up to the IM swim distance isn't as much work as the other two legs.

I went from the background of running marathons to doing my first IM in about a year.   I spent the first 6 months of the training having about fun and doing shorter distances to keep my training and my base honest.  My eyes were always on th IM but I didn't go hard core for the first 6 months.  The next 2 months were about building up the base I had built during the first 6 months so that I can handle the IM training.  The next 4 were about going full IM training hardcore mode.  By hardcore, I don't mean 100 mile bike ride and 20 mile run every weekend.  By hard core, I mean strict adherence to my IM training plan.

I think that most knowledgeable people/coaches will tell you that if you went hardcore intensive training for 12 months that you are setting yourself up for failure.

You got a little verbose there...he was looking for a short answer.  :-)

For those of you answering yes; you must know more information about him then is being showed here.

Some would consider me active, but there is no way I could do an IM in one year.

So would answering "No."

Some would consider me active, but there is no way I could do an IM in one year.

That's your opinion, and your entitled to it.

Here's my experience:  I've been "active" for 4.5 years.  Did my first tri in 2005, a half Ironman in 2006.  My longest race in 2007 was an OLY.  In 2008 I did zero tri's.  We had to do some work on the house and I went on a 2-week backpacking trip.  Jan-July '08 I ran a total of 224 miles (32 / month), swam 60K yards (8500 / month), and rode 20 miles (not worth calculating).  Not exactly Ironman preparation.  I registered for IMCdA '09 (6/21/09) and ramped up starting August 1, 2008 to finish in 13:38.

So, to the OP, yes, it can be done, particularly if you've already got some endurance sport experience as you indicate.  Whether you'll do so is really up to you.

You are right.  There is no way you could do an IM with that mindset.  Change your thinking.  "What one man can do, another can do."

If you can run 1 mile and bike 10 miles, I submit that you can do an IM with 1 year of training.  You are not gonna KQ but, if you train hard for a solid year, you can finish an IM.

Agreed- you can do this in 1 year if you train smart and stay injury free

All depends on your goal. To finish with a smile? To go sub 12? To KQ?

Someone who describes himself as active by quantifying it with "marathons" (i.e., plural) and throws in cycling and "a continuous active lifestyle" (i.e., didn't do a marathon 10 years ago but is currently in that lifestyle) has at least a very strong base in one of the three legs and a non-couch base on a second leg of the IM, I would say is in a pretty decent stage to start IM training a year out.  For me at least, that's the same boat as I was in.

Keep in mind that the question was whether he can cross the finish line in one year not whether he will qualify for Kona in one year.  I don't see how a person with that background can't do it in one year.   You may not "do an IM" in one year but I'd bet if you start training for an IM one year out that you would be able to cross that finish line if you consider your current state as "active."

I think the time limit is 17hrs not one year

while more info on what you consider active would be great, but I'd vote yes you can.

It might be mentally challenging to train for one race all year, maybe but a sprint/oly for the first 4 months goal.  about 5-6 months out do a 1/2 IM.. then start training for your IM

As long as you have a supportive family and a spare 15-20 hours per week and a good orthopedic doctor.

I'm going for IMCdA next year - will be my first IM.  I wore a nice dent into my couch over the last few years (and, shhh, I've been a smoker for the last decade).  I have a lot of confidence that it will be a great experience and I have no doubt that I'll finish easily (easily in the context of an IM).

I went from zero cycling experience, short distance running (3-5 miles) and little swimming in June of 2008 to completing a sub 12 hour IM in August 2009.

Yes, you can do it, if you put in the training and time.

No doubt. Get a plan and follow it. Sounds like you have an adequate base.

You can.  Its all about work ethic, you already have the endurance base, now you need the cycling and swimming training.  I signed up for IMSG with 12 months to go with a similiar background and with 9 months out I'm no longer concerned at all about 'just finishing'.
