I've been at this game a few years at this point.  I have talked to local merchants about the need for plus size run/bike/swim wear, I have petitioned online vendors to give us some products to help us stay fit and I am finally getting some people to listen.  I am asking folks to let me know where you get your tri wear, one piece tri suits specifically.  Meanwhile I continue the hunt for comfortable, reasonably priced, quality, plus sized athletic gear.  http://healthatmysize.wordpress.com

I love www.aerotechdesigns.com for bike and tri shorts that go way up in plus sizes. Great quality and great prices. As far as the trisuits, that's tougher. When I was heavier, I had a Danskin XXl thats fits 18-20 but it's not my favorite. I actually have a couple of men's XL trisuits that I love. My favorite is a de soto  I got from .com.

I bought my one and only trisuit at http://jamtrisuits.com/how_to_order.htm

I have the size large and it provides ample room. So unlike other trisuits, that compress, flatten and tighten and make you feel like a sausage, there may be a little jiggle in your wiggle but that's okay because I'd rather be comfortable.

Funny that this is being discussed. I am actually in the process of creating a line of clothing that will cater to the larger size triathlete. In particular, and the first order of business, will be the creation of wetsuits for the clydesdale/athena group. For me, having raced at 5'8" and 252 lbs., I was never able to find a wetsuit that fit. They are always way too long.

So... since you asked, I'll ask you: what type of body shapes need specific attention?

I have already considered the shorter/heavier person (XL, XXL, or XXXL but only a 24-32" inseam)
I have also, obviously, considered the larger belly size and/or larger hips/tush athlete.

Do larger size women require additional breast support in a wetsuit or does the tightness/strength of the neoprene provide enough support?

Also, I'm considering adjustable wet suits - sort of like the kids jeans at the Gap which allow you to adjust their waist sizes. The difference would be that you could adjust the ankles/wrists to provide easier entry/removal.

Suggestions?

In terms of having someone creating a line of clothing for clydes/athenas, the key in my opinion would be making the larger wetsuit triathlon specific.

I had actually thought about putting together a business plan to do just this same thing, but I dont have the time.

It's pretty easy to determine that you'd want wetsuits made mostly of Yamamoto #38 (standard) and/or #39 (higher air cell content, better stretch) limestone based neoprene. This is mostly where EVERY wetsuit out there is made from (I got a lot of this information from a de Soto rep, and confirmed it elsewhere). The issues are:

1. Fit. Finding fits for larger folks that are form fitting but flexible enough to use for swimming.
2. coating. Most tri wetsuits have a coating that reduces drag through the water, primarily though filing in the pores on the outside of the suit.

Im 6'2", 320#. Im currently using an Akona diving suit.

This is great! Okay here's my dilemma, I'm 5 feet tall and 170 but curvy, my measurements are
40C-34-40 so to avoid my chest being compressed I have to go up a size but then it's too big in the waist or if I go by height and weight its too long and too low on the arm holes so water gets inside. I also have to contend with muscular arms and thighs.

I contacted several wetsuit rental companies and only wetsuitrental.com took the time to work with me over the phone. They mailed me 5 different wetsuits and we finally decided on the size 6, two piece Desoto and it's okay but I think it could be better. I need a wetsuit which accounts for a womanly shape.

I also have the same problem in finding a trisuit. Any suggestions?
