Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5, and packed a few things together. Loaded car and drove to Neil and Susan's by 5:45 - we were car pooling to Wadena. Beautiful foggy morning (perhaps not ideal for driving on highway, but great sights). Snacked on way in (yogurt, pb&h, fruit). Arrived in Wadena close to 8. Unloaded, put on race wheels, registered.
Event warmup:

Rode out on course 4km and back (about 15 minutes). Last minute check (all okay), then out opposite the course for a few loops until my turn to go.

Comments:

Had a solid start. Didn't drink enough - shouldn't have relied only on bike frame bottle. Had a Gu at the turn-around. Lost a little luster about 10km. Regained focus after Erica passed me. Initial stretch back into wind took effort to regain groove. Tried doing math (if I'm going 35kph and there are 10km to go, how much longer...), but figured out enough to say "I can do this, keep pushing".

Cory (1' back) caught me after 5.5 minutes. Erica (2' back) caught me after 20 minutes. Frank (not sure how far back) caught me at maybe at about 15+km - don't remember. I caught one guy with about 4km to go.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.

Warm down:

Yeah, I didn't save anything for the run... I could barely sit on my seat to cool down. Rode long enough until I had stretched out enough.

Visiting and post-race chili lunch after. Nice day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

10 lbs that wouldn't go away this summer, lack of strength training, sitting in a car for 2+ hrs before race start?

Event comments:

World Masters Time Trial Challenge: The way this works is each person's time is compared to their age standard. My age standard time is 1:14:29, so I was 5:55 faster than my standard... good for me! :) The five best time differences are totaled (some guys were 15-20 minutes under), and that gives us a score. The group with the best total over standard "wins" (bragging rights, I guess). More details here.
