Set up inc
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 20m 14s
Overall Rank = 23/102
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/13
Pre-race routine:

Ate peanut butter toast and applesauce. Ate a Clif Bar 45 miuntes before the race. Listened to Gwen Stefani on the headphones.
Event warmup:

Swam 200 meters in the lake to decide if I was wearing the borrowed wetsuit or not. Decided yes to the wetsuit as it made it more effortless to sight.
Swim
  • 13m 57s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first open water swim. Got buffetted pretty bad in the first 200, so I turned on the kick and searched for holes to get to "peaceful" water.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more open water swimming.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Jogged up the beach. I got the wetsuit rolled down to my waist before exiting the water thanks to all the BT tips. It just kept inching downward as I jogged to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 35m 29s
  • 11 miles
  • 18.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a BLAST on the bike course. Once I got up the main hill and still had legs, I went crazy. Passed lots of people, enjoyed the beautiful scenery, am amazed I didn't have bugs on my teeth from all the time spent with a big grin on my face.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more conservatively to save my legs for the run. I felt like those cartoons with the angel and devil siting on opposite shoulders. Angel, "Slow down, you need your energy for the run". Devil,"You're a lousy runner. Sock it to 'em on the bike".
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Stopped to take an extra swig of cytomax before leaving T2. Bad move. Full bladder on the run course.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink after dismounting the bike.
Run
  • 29m 27s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Yes, I had no legs for the run. Could have muddled through it had it not been so STEEP. When I was on the steepest portion of the course I saw 2 people ahead of me start walking. So I walked, too. Problem is, when I start walking in training, it means the run is over. My body really fought me when I started running again. I struggled to get my cadence and breathing back to normal all while having to descend the "mountain" we just climbed. Almost ran off course if it weren't for the nice volunteers and fellow racers who started yelling at me.
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself on the bike. Practice walk/runs in training. Run more hills. Run more tempo. Run more!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed at husband's feet at the finish. Just kidding. Walked and mingled.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am a lousy runner who rode like a maniac on the bike.

Event comments:

Had lots of fun. Knew what I was doing to myself while I was tearing up the bike course. Paid the price on the run. But man o man, it was FUN.

Nice race! Way to kick some rear on the bike...and it was FUN to boot! I made the same mistake in T2 on my tri... that one last swig of water really bounced around. We live an learn. Good work!
