Pickle Events
Total Time = 8h 30m
Overall Rank = 38/322
Age Group = 35 - 39
Age Group Rank = 9/31
Pre-race routine:

The usual bagel and gatorade for the one hour drive to Baxter. One cup of coffee before leaving the house
Event warmup:

10 minute warmup run and lots of stretching.
Swim
  • 11m 54s
  • 962 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim - fairly congested as only 3 minutes between waves. I was wave two. I was able to draft for about 1/4 of the swim. Sighting on the final leg was tough as we were headed due east and into the sun.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - very pleased with the time
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

A little slow due to getting wetsuit off of right foot. Keep using bodyglide on the ankles.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, other than practice getting into shoes on the bike.
Bike
  • 48m 41s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Took two accelgels on the bike in the flask. Probably drank 10 ozs of water. Passed by a lot of people in waves one and two. I guess that's what I get for being one of the first out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

I have got to get better on the bike - always seems to be my weakest event. Need lots of time on the trainer in the off season. I took 67th place on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing
Run
  • 27m 48s
  • 4.4 miles
  • 06m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

As above - could have used the mile markers.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace at mile 3
Post race
Warm down:

Just a little walking - trying to find my wife and the kids

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No knowledge of the course - not sure how far I had left to go.

Course: Very flat course - ran a 7:08 pace. Tried not to go out too fast, but no mile markers until mile 3 so it was tough to estimate my pace. It always seems that I'm running slower than my actual pace in these races. I think that I could have picked up the pace a little earlier in the run, but I just didn't know how far I had ran.

Nice run! Looks like you finished a couple minutes ahead of me (I finished 11th in same AG). I had a decent bike but you probably below by me early on the run.

Very nice job! I was 20th in the age group, and I thought I had a decent race. High level of competition out there.

I saw mile markers at every mile on the run (both painted on the road and then a little farther on stuck in a cone), but I'm not convinced they were equally spaced. I felt like I had a pretty steady pace going, but the markers were coming at somewhat irregular intervals. As fast as you were running, it's not surprising you missed them, though. (I had plenty of time to take note of all the little details on the run course.)

Thanks - congrats to DB and Johnny, as well. I did see mile marker 3, but must have tuned out the other markers. Overall a good venue. I was very pleased with my times - given that this was a "last minute" race. My A race was the Chisago Half Iron. My bike split reaffirms my weakness - looks like many miles on the trainer this winter. My wife gave me a subscription to NetFlix last x-mas - may need to put that on my wish list again!

Nice race!  Great swim time.  Nice swiI did see the mile markers on the run as well.  I like my Garmin for pacing on the run.  I don't usually show the distance, just the lap (mile) and overall pace but I can hit a button and see the distance as well.  I just need to get remember to hit the lap button during races.   I did Chisago half as well.
