Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 21m 53s
Overall Rank = 9/71
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/10
Pre-race routine:

Arrived on site around 6.40am, transition would be closing at 7.30am, so perfect timing
Getting bib, chip and body marking went all smooth

Had my usual pre-race breakfast (1 ClifBar, 2 bananas, a little bit of Heed and a coffee), that combination really works for me, so no more changes!

Event warmup:

None really, also as usual...;-(
Swim
  • 20m 1s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m / 100 meters
Comments:

That was a fairly tough swim, the swell was much more than it looked like from the shore
Especially going north, we had the waves from ahead/right
Found my spot after about a quarter of the swim
Breathing was more difficult than normal with the waves. Required repeated focus back on regular breathing and longer arm pulls
Was able to pass at least 2 guys towards the end
Swam as far to the shore as possible to avoid too much walking on stones
What would you do differently?:

Finally start drafting
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

The racks were ridiculously crowded! So I chose an empty rack but that meant having to go through the complete transition zone with bike, but it was worth it
Bike
  • 1h 11m 17s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.92 mile/hr
Comments:

My first race with 21+ mph speed, thanks Cervelo!
On the way out we must have had a slight headwind, did not quite manage to keep it over 20. Focused on cadence and kept HR right under LT
Then the way back was a blast
At the turnaround, I was in 6th place, lost one place on the way back
No issues this time at the spot where the sprint turnaround merged with our lane, no cars stopped and luckily no sprinter around this time

What would you do differently?:

Focus even more on cadence
Really happy with my bike performance today!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Just a small sip of Heed
Took two Hammer gels with me to eat on the run
What would you do differently?:

I need to start practicing keeping the shoes on the bike
Run
  • 47m 46s
  • 5.95 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

This was one of my best Oly runs!!
My left foot was a little numb for the first mile, other than that I was able to start out strong and keep a pretty consistent pace

Lost three more places on the run, what the heck...

Volunteering was not good on the run, waterstations were either not manned at all, or they stood around not knowing how to hand out drinks. I always asked for Heed, got water instead

What would you do differently?:

Loose weight, more speedwork
This is the area that I need to focus from now on!
Post race
Warm down:

Warm-down happened very quickly: it was pouring like crazy now!

Had some melon, several slices of Pizza.
Not really thirsty, legs were doing fine also, I wonder if I could have pushed a little harder even...;-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Next big thing for me now is the running, this is where I need to focus on!!

Event comments:

I love the swim and the bike in this race
THe run is a little boring
Organization was generally okay, lots of volunteers on the bike course, but the volunteers on the run did not really know how to do it

Unfortunately, the Clyde division started at 225, luckily I dont fall into that category
