Subject: Monster Dash 10 Miler?

So... I only have two more races on the calendar for 2009.  How did that happen?  My next plan is to sign up for the Monster Dash 10-miler on 10/31.  Has anyone done this?  Do you know/remember if it fills up?

I am doing the Team Ortho Minneapolis Du this weekend and I want to hold off registering, hoping I may get a discount in my race packet.  But if there's a risk, I will just sign up now.   The early registration fee goes up on 9/2, so I imagine a bunch of folks will register in the next few days.

I'd do the Freedom 10-miler again, but it's at noon again this year and that just doesn't work for me.    But if anyone knows of another great 10 miler in the fall or winter, I'm all ears.

I've been invited by a friend to run this.  They are dressing up.  I suppose I will too.  I'll have to go check out last year's race reports...

Yeah - I know that costumes are big with this race.  I just can't see myself doing that though...  I hope you'll be there!

Edit:  It was new last year and I couldn't find any RRs.  I just added an entry into the race database for it.

Sara and I will most likely do the Freedom 10 miler again.  The Monster Dash sounds like more fun but it would cost us $50 more to do it.  It doesn't sound like that much fun.  Plus it works out well for us to drive up that morning for a race that starts at noon.

I'm signed up for the Monster Dash <gulp> half marathon.  Not sure how it happened, it just did.  My crazy friend from work is running with me.  Another friend from work is doing the 10 miler.  I think Jeremy is running the half too.  It is a bit pricey, but it was the best option for a half for me.

Emily - I'll be doing the Du too (woohoo) - I'll keep an eye out for you

I'm also signed up for the Monster 1/2 mary on 10/31 - it'll be my first Monster-series race, and I'm looking forward to it - I've heard lots of great things!

Cheers, Chris

Dude!  It will be perfect weather for running.  Although I read someone's report from last year and it was 44 degrees   Still sounds good to me, but I can understand that is chilly for some.

I don't think there will be a discount i n the packet--just based on the fact that there hasn't been in the other Team Ortho races we did this summer. But that could be a packet stuffing error, too... :-)

I'm doing the Du this weekend, but after some of the issues I saw at the MPLS marathon/half this summer, I am vaguely afraid.

I did think about the Monster Dash half, but in the end, opted for Whistlestop Half in Ashland instead.

Yeah, it's a pipe dream about the discount. I have no reason to believe there will be one.

Issues?  Please expand on that...

I'm sure most of them were standard "First Race" things--not Randy Fulton esq, but enough to make me HOPE that all goes smoothly when they now have bikes involved.

Mostly course control stuff--when the half leaders were coming back, they had slower marathoners all over the course still and the leaders in spots had to fight through them. They still hadn't set up the finishers chutes and it was almost finishing time (see again, half finsihers crossing paths with slower marathoners going out). Finish line far from refreshement area--and no one telling folks where to go. People not getting their finishers jackets or bottles, etc. Course was a bit long (more than can be accounted for by not taking the turns smartly).

Like I said, it was mostly just general disorgainization issues. I'm sure they will figure it out, but sometimes when you try to make an inagural event HUGE (as they are doing with this duathlon and all its related trappings), you end up with more problems than normal...which is why I am worried about the Du. It's one thing when you just have runners...but when you have runners and bikers and people going every which way (and a TT as well as the Du people) AND you are in the city (as opposed to a relatively simple course ouot on country roads)... the potential for disaster is a lot greater.

I am certainly HOPING that it will be fine. I am just well aware that the possibility for chaos exists.

Thanks for the warnings, Megan.  I suspect you may end up dealing with some of those things on Sunday.  Hopefully they will have them sorted out by the time I return to T2, which will be much later.

I am concerned about this being in the city and with the turnaround. Also, those roads are nasty for bikes so expect a LOT of bouncing.

It's so much more straightforward to run a running race, so I am surprised by the issues you describe from the race earlier this year.  At least the Monster half has been going on for a while, so it ought to be better.  But I def will make sure I know the 10 mile route so I don't have to depend on the race to tell me where to go.  I'm imagining the start, at the congested Lake Harriet, will be a real treat

Excellent points.  I'm doing the Du just for giggles & fun this weekend, so I'm going to try to keep a smile on my face throughout.  If there's buffoonery, I'll just be yelling "Serenity NOW!!!" a lot...

"On your left... Serenity NOW!"
"Lookin' good, keep it up...  Serenity NOW!"
"Dude, your aero helmet is on backwards... Serenity NOW!"

As with any inaugural event, it should be interesting - I'll be curious what kind of overall "vibe" there is at the packet pick-up on Saturday - I'm planning to be there right when it opens.  If the packet pick-up is a mess, that will be a good indication of what to expect the next morning.

See y'all out there!

Cheers, Chris

I've never done Monster Dash, but everyone I know that has done it says organization wise it's fine. They do note it's congested...but when you put all those people on the path, you kind of expect that.

I'm sure it'll be a great race :-) It looks like a fun one, at the very least.

Yeah, I have no real expectations at all for this race--it's a "just for fun" day, so my panties shall (hopefully) remain un-wadded if there is chaos. :p

Yeah, I am going to packet pickup right away as well.  I want to make sure I get my backpack, which is the sole reason I signed up for this thing.   As far as taking it in stride, I am also considering training right through it - C-race style.  Might be best, all things considered, if I can just take it easy.

See you all in a few...

That's a good point about the city roads being a mess - I was thinking about putting my race wheels on for this one, but I may reconsider that.

Meh, I'm not sure.  I'll probably end up throwing them on - I haven't done a "race" with them yet, so it would be fun to see how they feel out there.

Hopefully there're no pile-ups at the turn-around - when I looked at the course map, that's the first thing that popped out at me.

Emily - I'll keep an eye out for you at packet p/u.  I want that bag too

Cheers, Chris

If I had to guess how they would feel...I'm going to say: Bumpy :p

I really would prefer not to flat in this race. That would irk me, esp. since I paid a jillion dollars for it, and since my tires are new :p

On that note, REI still has some UA Cold WX Gear stuff on sale for great prices. I've picked up some nice tops over the summer for cheap. I <3 UA gear.
