I've only done one tri ever.  That was in July of this year.  I really enjoyed it and wanted to try something a little more challenging before the end of the year.

Unfortunately, even though Deer Creek is very close, I already have a commitment the day of the sprint, so I'm leaning towards Hueston Woods. (My other option would be to do the woman's only at Deer Creek the day before, but it wouldn't be more challenging than the one I've already done

Has anyone done Hueston Woods in the past?  (I think it's new again this year, but maybe several years ago they did it?)  Anyone doing it this year?

Sorry I cant help you out with any racing info for Hueston Woods. I was just wondering if there is anyplace nice in the area to get in a lake swim or run. I will be there this weekend for a wedding.

I've never been there, but according to the state park website they have a swimming pool at the lodge and a 1500 ft public beach.

Maybe you can let me know after this weekend how hilly it is

i ride in the area for training-it is definately not flat but I cant think of any singular hill that stands out (I havent done the official course but the general oxford area and north) so expect a rolling ride.

They havent done this race at this venue in awhile I guess. I am tempted to do it but I want to the HIM at Deer creek the following weekend and I dont know if it would be wise to do an OLY the weekend before.

Definitely rolling hills for both the bike and the run.  I can't think of any hill that is too steep, but there will be a few lengthy stretches at 3 - 5  percent grade.

Does anyone know if the swim will be wetsuit legal?   Somehow I doubt it, but it is worth asking!

Yikes,  I just noticed it is in less than 3 weeks, and I am nowhere near ready.  Just came back from injury (ran into a dog on my bike and suffered multiple injuries).   Just ran yesterday for the first time in 2 months, and felt horribly after 5 miles....

I am going to die!

I'm guessing (or hoping) that it will be wetsuit legal.  Especially if the cool nights we are having now continue.

My running is suffering quite a bit lately and I'm hoping to just make it through myself.

I will be doing this as my second triathlon as well.  I just did the Great Ohioan in Delaware last weekend, and also did the Flag City Duathlon in June in Findlay.

I've been registered for over six months, and I was really looking forward to it  (still am, but different).   The swim is going to kill me since I haven't been in the water since early June.  I was in a bike wreck in which I suffered a severe separation.  Still have not been in the water, so I am not sure how it is going to feel.
I have always been pretty strong between T1 and T2, and have been spending significant time on the bike lately.
The run, is another story.. again, because of the wreck, I have had some back problems and have been off my feet (bike is different because it is low impact), and almost lost my lunch yesterday after running only 4 miles at 8minute mile pace.....
I am TOAST!

At any rate, hey, let me know if anyone wants to get a nice recovery lunch, followed by a nice recovery beer after the event!

hopefully i'll catch up with some of ya on the 20th. I'll be the guy with the lost look on his face. HAHA. I'm always down for an ice cold Guiness, especially after a HARD workout...

one question though: On race day, is it correct for me to assume that as a 24 year old male, I'd be in the first wave? sounds like if there's only gonna be 2 min. between waves, that i'm gonna get passed by TONS of people...

This is only my second ever tri so I won't be doing well either.  My running has been almost non existant in the past 6 months and I am still riding an old 10 speed, so the bike won't be pretty.  But I'm really looking forward to the experience and a chance to learn a little more.   I'll be happy if I can keep my paces the same as my first tri as this swim is a little longer.

I'm definitely up for post race dinner and beer, do you know of some place around there?  I'm sure there's a lodge, but not sure about beer there.

When you get your race packet, it will have all the waves and start times.  Depends on the race on how they do it.

Dont worry about getting passed, just stick to the plan and cross the finish line.  This is the reward for all your work.

Good luck to you all.

Beil - You will most definately be in the first wave. I haven't done an HFP race where the elites and the men >29 go first.

BubbaK - 4mi @ 8:00min per and your toast? Well... I would be toast too. Why don't you just slow down . Seriously though... if you are coming back from an injury and don't have the volume I would not push that hard. You already know that the race is going to be a sufferfest... don't make the months after even worse by going to hard while being under trained.

Scuba - I dd my first tri on my brothers mountain bike... he's 6'7" and I am 6'1"... The bike did not fit at all. Plus the knobby tires... I was slow.... but that is not the point at all. I fell in love with the sport after the first race. The combo of the events. The support from the other competitors. The feeling of accomplishment. It was great. You only get do your first race once. Go for the experience enjoy yourself, still push and race, but try to soak it in.

All - Good luck. Sounds like it will be a great race and a nice bike course. I am kicking myself for deciding to just train for a mary this year. It has been boring just running all the time. Hope to meet some of you in 2010.

I will not be racing at Hueston Woods, but live in the area and train there about once a week.  I tend to not wear a wetsuit (just don't like them), however, the water in the lake last weekend was cooling down.  I bet it will be wetsuit leagal.  The bike course does have rolling hills.  The road going away from the lake and out of the park is a little rough, but once you hit the main roads of the course it will be a smooth ride.  Rollers to and from Oxford.  There may be one hill and some rollers on the run on Main Loop Rd.  Hueston Woods is a great place to train and it is nice to see they have a race there again.  I may participate next year.  Good luck to everyone racing!

Oxford (Miami University) is just up the road.  Lots of places for food and drinks!  :-)

Absolutely!  There are plenty of watering holes around Oxford... I will probably head over to Mac 'n Joes afterward... (I do have a hockey game that afternoon, so I I may not be there until late that afternoon, unless I skip my game).

due to a crash on my bike last weekend, I'll be limping HARDCORE on the swim. I think I pulled one of my pectoralis muscles, as it is extremely sore. I'm still determined to complete the event, but if/when you see someone lagging way behind in a black tri suit, that'll be me. bike and run shouldn't be an issue though.

This is pretty funny...  the race will be plagued with the walking wounded.   I had my bike crash early July in which I severely separated my shoulder.  It is much better now, except it is about an inch lower than the other and it looks like I have a big bump on it.  I tried going swimming for the first time yesterday, and it felt surprisingly well.   My other problem is with my lower back, which bothers me a lot when I run, so I'll see if it gets better by race time, else I may speed by a lot of folks on the bike only to see them run past me as I walk in pain...

Cheers!

Good luck to everyone going to Hueston Woods.  I'll be getting there Saturday, and staying to do some sightseeing after the race.   Plan on staying Sunday night and coming back Monday.
Hope everyone has a good race.  This will most likely be my 2nd, and last, tri of the season.

Good luck to all of you.  I probably won't make it there until Sunday morning to pick up my packet, although I am debating on camping on Sat.  We'll see what happens and what the weather brings.

I'm excited about this.  And glad it's my last one for the year too
