A friend of mine passed this on to me, thought you hardcore climbers might find it helpful. After almost killing myself doing Peacock I doubt I'll try the top 2. Please excuse the format, I didn't have time to straighten the data out.

For hard climbers, Thomas Novikoff has compiled information on dozens of Oahu's climbs.

5 hardest

1. Wilhemina Rise
13.6% average percent gradient

2. Halekoa Drive
11.52% average percent gradient

3. Peacock Flats
10.17% average percent gradient

4. Kamehame Drive
9.11% average percent gradient

5. Paula Drive
8.86 %average percent gradient

Climbs are presented by length:

Yeah, that's been on HBL's website for quite sometime. I recently started checking off the hills one by one...

I live within a mile of Wilhemina Rise and Halekoa Drive, and I can tell you, that when I recently made it to the top of each one while RUNNING... I was SUPER PROUD of myself. I've never seen anyone take these hills on a bike... and I've been asking around... I can't find anyone who has done it either. =)

My best climb recently has been Kilauae Ave behind Kapiolani CC, top grade 18%, avg 12%, but only 3/10th of a mile. =)

My next goal would be the Koko Head climb. Longer, steeper... but, I believe, somewhat illegal according to the the fence/signs banning you from the trail.

I live *ON* Halekoa Drive (near the top), and I *never* see anyone running it, but I do see about 3 cyclists per week making it up the hill.

When I lived on Oahu in the 80's I loved Tantalus! Now lived on the Big Island for last 20 years. Saddle road up to the Mauna Kea summit is the most challenging. Bring an oxygen tank along for this ride.

I also live on Halekoa Drive (near the bottom) and run up once every few weeks.  Takes me about 20-24mins up and 10-14 down. Strange you have never seen me.  Not like I move that fast.

I live on (well, just off) Wilhemina.  I've done sections of it on the bike, but never the whole thing in one shot.  My fiance has done Pualele on her mountain bike, but she's got a lot lower gears than I do on either of my road bikes - I can't granny down far enough to get all the way up Pualele.

I ran up Wilhemina for the first time a few weeks ago.  It took me a little under 15mins to get to the top.  That was hard one.

I was just going back to look at this list for some climbs.  I then noticed that Thomas Novikoff compiled this list.

I've never met Thomas, but he recently passed this month after what I heard was a due to incurable cancer.  His funeral service was a couple Saturday's ago at the top of tantlus, since it was his favorite place to ride.

I walk my dogs down, (to the stop sign) then back up the hill to the top, around the loop and back home nearly every night.   Down takes us 22-25 minutes, depending on how hard I push it.   Up (walking), takes us 35-38 minutes (again, depending on how hard I push it.)

Just look for the pair of huskies.
