Subject: MERIDA Scultura EVO 907-COM VS ORBEA ONIX
Hello all,

I am going to buy a bike to start my TRI training. Can someone help me decide whichbike is better:

MERIDA Scultura EVO 907-COM http://www.merida.ch/en_INT/Bikes.Detail.236
ORBEA ONIX http://www.orbea-usa.com/fly.aspx?layout=bikes&taxid=57&pid=139

In the links you can find the specs for each.

Thanks

The short answer is the one that fits.  But based on specs, I think the Merida is the better bike.  I have full Ultegra SL and Mavic Ksyrium Elites on my roadie and I love the set up.

curious what makes you say the Merida is better. The Merida has 6600g (2009 model year) components, the Obera has 6700 (2010; there is no ultegra sl next year). I'd say that's at best a tie (though all the 6700 ultegra parts are lighter than their 6600g counterparts, according to shimano).

Thanks you very much for your input guys.
I check at the store and the ORBEA they have comes with ultegra 6600 parts. The MERIDA is $400 moe expensive, I am not sure if this difference is justified, the only differences seem to be the brand (MERIDA vs ORBEA) and the wheels. Attached is a comparison table I prepared.

that confirmed what I though (assuming my weak spanish and assumptions about meanings of words holds): the Obera is a way better bike. If the prices were reversed (i.e., if the Merida was $400 less) I'd have to think about it. Merida is a 'no name' generic brand (they make bikes for other companies), Obera is well-known. The wheels are the only component that's better on the Merida, and not much so; for the $400 difference you could get a better set of wheels.

I just looked at the spec sheets and didn't read the details.  For $400 less, I'd take the name brand and trade up on the wheels if you don't like them.  I love my Ksyriums but they are probably overkill for a training.

hey guys, sorry about putting the file in spanish, I missed it. Well basically the difference is in the wheels, and the price ($400). I was inclining towards the MERIDA, but now i am going to think about it and see if I can get a wheel change for the $400 in the ORBEA.

One last question, I am a beginner, do you think these two options are a good choice for a beginner? Do you think I should go for something more basic? I have two other options in alluminium and with Shimano 105 components...

Both are probably more bike than anyone truly needs, beginner or not.  I've known plenty of people who have upgraded from lower end bikes a few months after purchase.  Never seen it the other way around.  If your overall budget can handle it, go for it.
