Someone has to start it.  Who's racing?  Who wants to?  It's still open...

curlzrn - 2009-08-28 2:11 AM I'm doing it.  It's my 4th tri but my 1st ocean swim

According to the race director, as of 6:30 this morning there are 25 spots left. My fiancee and I plan on signing up today, because they have been getting about 10 signups a day.

Like curlzrn, this will be my first ocean swim, and 4th race overall. It's also my first ocean race. I had planned to do Urban Epic, but my fiancee worked it as an athletic trainer, so I didn't feel like it'd be fair to make her watch me do a race.

It'll be her first race, and just a week after our wedding, so we're both stoked to do our first races as a married couple together. I'm trying to get her a new bike as a secret wedding present (she never reads the forums, just does logging and reads race reports), so I'm going to try to have that for her by then too.

Ocean swims are a blast!  Nothing to be worried about!  You just have to sight more often due to the currents.

Congrats on the nuptuals.

I haven't decided yet but worst case, I can swim breast stroke and sight every 2 seconds. But for as short as that swim is, I ought to be able to be fine with freestyle, and I sight OK in open water. I'm a decent freestyle swimmer, but I don't have my breathing under control during that like i do when I breaststroke, so I get winded much easier. It's on my list of things to work on over the winter in my pool workouts.

Thanks! We're really excited. 3 weeks from tomorrow!

Just freestyle until you feel out of breath, pop up, get a few deep breaths, and get that face back in the water!

This will be my first tri as well. I wish it were tomorrow...

I have two questions:
Shoes: Necessary for a beach run?
Wetsuit: yes/no?

I don't think shoes are necessary but I think you'd be faster with them. The sand is hard packed. I am wearing a wetsuit for sure. I do not believe they are mandatory however.

OK. Shoes for sure.
According to the site, the wetsuit is "recommended". Do you think a decent tri suit would be helpful instead? I'm trying to keep my costs low, but at the same time would prefer not to get hypothermia Laughing

At some point you'll want to buy a wetsuit. They really make a huge difference in speed and energy expenditure. But, until that time, you really don't need one in these warm summer months. You'll be fine in Nantasket without one.

This will be my frist tri also.  I just made the commitment and bought the wetsuit.  now I think how did I ever swim without it?     You can always rent one and I am opting for shoes on the run.  It will just give me more support

If the weather keeps like this, the water will be chilly.  It was upper 50's, low 60's last year.  I would highly recommend a wetsuit.

Bah. I guess I'll have to breakdown and buy one. I'm sure it'll be handy in the spring as well. Any suggestions on where/what to buy?

The Xterra wetsuits are top notch and they are having a ridiculous sale right now.  I have the Vortex 3 full and love it.

This is probably the best deal out there.  Ends tomorrow though, so I would pull the trigger soon.  I have one and love it.

Gotcha! Are you going to sign up for this one?! It's right in your backyard. I am going to be training on course Wed (run intervals), Thurs (full brick), and Fri (swim start repeats) mornings if you want to join in the fun...

I'm in!

It will be my 6th and last race of the season. I'm also doing Hyannis 2 and Buzzards Bay. It would have been my 7th but they cancelled the Cranberry Sprint this past weekend. But there is one more on October 3rd in Montauk, NY. My only hesitation is that it would be quite costly.

Registration is 105.00, the area hotels mandate a 2 day minimum stay at 100.00 a night and then with incidentals I approximate spending close to $500.00. A bit too much for me but then again, I could make a weekend out of it because the 1/2 iron man is the next day and that would be exciting to watch.

Friday mornings in Nantasket?  At the actual beach?  I am planning on practicing the beach starts.  Run in from the beach, dive, dive again, dive again, swim, turn around, body surf in, run up the beach and do it again and again.  Come on, I need to someone to look silly with!

I sooo wish I could do this race. We had a cottage on the bay growing up. Used to go to sleep to the sound of the roller coaster at Paragon Park.
