Subject: Pool Allergies???
For the past month and half, every time I get out of the pool after my training sessions I feel sick as hell. Among the symptoms are: runny nose, sore-itchy throat, sneezing and headaches. At first I though I might had caught a virus and I was getting the flu or something. I took some cold medicine and took a few days off from the pool. Within a day or two I was feeling normal so I continue with my swim training and it happened again. I kept thinking I was getting sick so I took days completely off. Anyway long story short it keeps happening and within a day the symptoms always disappear. Ny now I am thinking I might be allergic to chlorine or something? Does anyone have experienced something similar?

I had similar problems, plus my ears would always hurt the day after I swam. I found that using ear drying drops after swimming helped eliminate the ear and throat issues. Plus 5 minutes in the steam room after I swim usually clears up my nose.

I had all of my skin turn red and my hair turn blonde. I switched pools and haven't had problems since.

The pool drives my skin crazy.  I have eczema anyway and the pool makes it a hundred times worse.  I can't wait for the lakes to warm up.  Is there any way that you can swim in open water instead? Chlorine is super-nasty!!!

I have similar problems. Started using ear drops, eye drops, and albuterol inhaler and swimming is now tolerable. Also find a post swim visit to the steam room is very helpful. Your ENT doc may be a lot of help to you.

i sneeze after workouts often. I also can't take ocean water on my skin. If you do have a reaction with the chlorine, maybe a different pool might help

Use a nose clip in the pool. It looks dorky as hell, but it reduces the effect of chlorine fumes, which are strongest at the surface.

Thanks for the replies.

Nikki - that thread really helped! I’ll try a couple of things next time and hopefully I will enjoy swimming on a pool again!

I get bad headaches from swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool. My doctor suggested taking an ibuprofen before I swim. This does work, but I'd prefer not to be gassed in the first place. :/

I would get this problem because the chemicals were out of whack at my pool and they had dirty water in the pool. Something funky would happen to the water and it just was junk. I switched my gym membership to the local Y and I'm all good now.
