Did a nice practice this morning with an OWS and short 25 mile bike.  Mounted the B16 on the roof rack of my car and drove home.  I get home and start to reverse into the garage (because new garages are so tight to fit 2 cars in) and CRACK!!!  Oh my God, I didn't....

Guess who forgot to pull the bike off the roof rack.  Me.  From my evaluation, it looks like the only thing that broke and was stressed was the fork/steering tube.  Everything else, including the rear 404 (which is what hit the actual house).  Hopefully my LBS can get a rush delivery from Felt in California for a new fork before too long because I have a half in two weeks.

That is my sad story of the day.  I hope everyone else has a nice day.

Had a friend do the same thing to his bike and he called himself and Idiot for doing it.  So HE would call you and idiot...and since I trust him.... I would call you and idiot also.

Seriously...hope that is the extent of the damage and it don't cost a lot to repair.

I appreciate the confirmation.  I guess I'll tie a string around my finger to remind me.  What was that string for again?

That's why I carry my bikes on the back of the car. I would probably repeatedly do the same thing.

This is why I have a truck where the bike just lays nicely all by itself.  I'm sure I would still back in to something if they were mounted on the back.  Who put that damn tree in my way??

Yakima "Load Alert".

It's a magnetic sign that you put on your hood.  Over 25mph it lays flat.  Slow to under 25mph and it flips up a warning sign about bikes on the roof.

Depending on the extent of the damage, you might want to see what your home owners insurance will cover

whose bike was it?   I did something similar while getting on the road to go see husband in the field.  Luckily,  I decided to take MY old mtn bike out so I could go out in the field with him and ride around while he worked.   I had my bike up on the subaru (the hatchback type of outback- not high profile) and decided to stop in at the walgreens for some reason.   they have some low hanging thing over the opening to the parking lot and "crunnnnnchhhhh" I hear this horrific sound.    I think I lucked out as the steering column was loose anyway and I just turned the handle bars.    I left the parking area via the flower bed (sorrrrrryyyyy).  I might be divorced right now had I decided I would take HIS newish bike for the trip.

So, if you are ever passing through Reno on your way to somewhere with a bike on top, and you see that funny Walgreens that is over the highway, keep going!

sorry about your bike.

Start hiding the garage opener from yourself, somewhere safe, when you rack the bike on the car.

Maybe make a checklist for those ride days, tape it to the steering wheel and/or staple it to your forehead.  That's what I would need to do...

Congratulations on joining that club. You would be surprised to know how many people are members.

A slightly smaller membership club are those of us who have managed to actually crash while riding the trainer.

As someone else said, when putting bike(s) on the top of the car, move the garage door opener to the trunk or back storage area. That way you have to actually stop, get out of the car and get the door opener out. That MIGHT remind you of the bike on top.

Oh, and BTW, I think it does mean you are an idiot.

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling that this is not that exclusive a club after all.  Thanks for all the other idiots out there posting their own "moments" and making me feel less alone.  I think I'm going to wrap my garage door opener in a reminder note so that I have to open the note to open the door.  If this happens again, I'm going to just park in the driveway and hate myself for the rest of my life.

I just purchased a roof rack and due to readings on BT I'm trying to make sure this doesn't happen to me.  I was thinking of making a sign that read "Bikes Stupid!" and securing it to the bottom section of the garage door.  When the door is opened it should be hanging right by the header of the door, thereby informing me of my potential for stupidity.

Just a thought, and it would cost about $.15 to make on paper with a marker.
