I started very simple last night by doing a 45 minute walk barefoot.  I have been having pain in my left ankle for over a month now and am barely running at the moment.  I am hoping that starting very slowly on the barefoot path will help strengthen my feet and solve my issues.  I had some hot spots on the balls of my feet when I was done, but that was gone when I woke up this morning.  I need to toughen up my soles before I even attempt running barefoot for even a short distance.

Do some short runs to toughen your sole. Try running for only a minute. Running barefoot will help with the toes. I don't find that walking barefoot helps toughen up the skin on my toes.

So I tried it this morning for the first time. Ran 3 miles at 7.5 mph on the gerbil wheel, then kicked off the shoes, slowed it down to 6 mph and did a .5 mile cool down barefoot.

Jury is still out on this one. Will have to keep trying.

Anyone know how barefoot works for people with overpronation issues? I'm highly interested in trying Vibram FiveFingers, but am not sure how it will work.

It is one way to point out the issues with your form.

You will NOT run on your toes if you are running barefoot and letting your body do its own thing.  The only reason you will be running on your toes barefoot is if you are forcing it.

The elite level of Kenyans/East and South Africans do not all run barefoot.  This is an urban legend (just like they do not all run to school each day).  The most famous East African runner to race barefoot was Bekele and the only reason he did that in the first Olympic marathon he won (Rome) was because the shoes provided to the team were terrible.  At the next Olympics he ran in shoes (and repeated his gold medal performance).

Current running shoe choices are the cause of more running issues and injuries which is why people are going back to the more minimalist approach and all these weird shoe options are coming out.  BECAUSE of the over-reliance on stability and shock deadening materials it is important to go into barefoot running gradually.

With all that said ........ I don't do it personally.  Don't see the point as my form is pretty damn good from running thousands of miles.

Pronation not issue for barefooting, you will pronate naturally barefoot ...it maybe less or the same as with your shoes.

The Vibrams are not same as barefoot and you will run differently in them but they are closer than shoes with heel lift, arch support, cushioning etc.

If you try either just take it very very gradually.

I'm running in KSO's because I do a lot of trail running.

As we get closer to winter I'm starting to ponder the Flow's, though.  Already been out a few mornings with temps in the low to mid 40s.  After my feet get wet from running through a bit of dew covered grass and weeds, my toes are starting to get a bit chilly!

I've been considering running barefoot on the treadmill in the gym, but I'm not sure what type of response I'll get but I'd rather try it on a treadmill before I go on the road.

So, um, how do those Vibrams smell after a nice run without socks?

The whole idea of going au naturale is intriguing, but there is a significant "ick" factor to the idea of barefoot/lightly shoed running...

VFFs can be washed, I have a friend who wears them everywhere (gets lots of strange stares) they dont smell as bad as you think especially if you get a pair with the open top. Id recommend running in water shoes first before making the plunge into VFFs or other minimalist shoes just to make sure you like it. Im totally in love with my water shoes, same feel on bones ligaments etc in my feet/legs without having to further rough up the bottoms of my feet.

I started Tri's 3 years ago and ramped up too much too soon and ended up with ITBS...you know the drill.  I'm just now starting back from zero.  I think the last time I ran was at the end of 2008.  I'm an overpronator and in addition to the ITBS, I've had issues with my calfs being super tight.  I've done massage therapy(1-2 times per week for the last two years), ART(at least 20+ sessions maybe 30), self massage with the stick and roller, anti inflamatory meds, RICE, the hot tub, you name it and I've tried it.

I think I may be ready to start back, so I've been walking 10-20 mins 3-5 times per week and I've thrown in a few 100-200 yard runs.  So far, so good, but I just got a set of custom orthotics, so I'm also in the process of getting used to wearing them.

I'm a pretty barefoot guy anyway, so this is appealing to me, but do I dare?  I'm scared it will make my calf issues come back.  Thoughts?

I'm glad this is working for some folks.  Thanks

Im no doctor first and foremost, but IMHO... Even with shoes on there will be ample pressure on your calves etc, just starting back Id think it would be a better idea to keep the shoes on for a while till you get used to running some distances again, then try barefoot. When starting barefoot there is alot of strain, and for me it was centered in my lower calves, so that on top of the normal running adjustments probably wont serve you best.
