Anyone else almost had a heart attack after downing one of these?

Thought I would try one before my run this AM and my HR was in zone 5 the whole time. The run was suppose to be at 140HR and hardly moved from 170 even when i backed off to a 11:30 - 12 mintue pace. I felt fine but could not control my HR at all for the whole 10 miles.

I would suggest avoiding Redline then, because that stuff did the same thing to me.

Did you drink the entire little bottle.  There are 2 servings per container.  I use a little of this to add caffeine for my races, but have never drank a whole bottle at once.

Instead of that, I have a cup of coffee in the morning, and one-half of a can of Monster, for SPRINTS and 10k or less.

The crash comes around nap time, a couple of hours after the finish line.

I have discovered the wonder, joy, awe, and amazing power of the 5 hour energy for hiking and backpacking. Well, okay, backpacking kinda stinks cause there is so much packaging, but it is worth it for the hit.

But yeah, I read the package - 1/2 at a time.

You know what I use?  And it works really well.  I mean, it's the BEST!  After using it you have tons of energy without ANY crash!  I recommend this product above everything else on the market.  Trust me - it really is the abosulte best!

Getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night!  Sheesh!  Tongue out

I honestly think all "energy drinks" are a crock.

I got to see first hand the effects of 5 hour energy at the In and Out Burger in Vegas a few weeks ago. The girl taking our order ran through the menu options, different combinations of burgers and gave us a detailed report of her day and what she had done up until we walked through the door, all of this in about 13 seconds. She then stated," Sorry I'm like kinda a spazz today, I drank a 5 hour energy drink." Beautiful.

x2. I'm in the camp that says if you need energy drinks to get through the day, you just need more sleep.

Working 12-hr nights, I always keep a few 5 hr Energies in my bag.  Love 'em - use them sparringly, but love 'em.

I've never had a problem with them, but tried a 6 hr Energy (looks almost identical, but actually a different company) and got a bad niacine rush, which is probably what you got.  Scared the carp outa me.  Only lasted about 5 mins, but told my co-worker to dial the 9 and a 1 and stay ready.

That would be lovely.....

....except my boss frowns on me sleeping at work. And if I want to have more than one day of weekend, I gotta do the awake-for-way-too-long thing on one end or the other. Even when I don't, my body tells me at about 9 a.m. that it is past my bedtime. 1/2 of a 5 hour energy gets me through that so I can actually enjoy this gorgeous place I live. Alas, not all of us get to work a 9-5 and in to bed by 10 to sleep in the dark.

I can't speak for Fuzzy, but I'll give night shift people a pass. That is a tough schedule. It's all the 9-5ers and kids in school (high school and college) who live on energy drinks that bother me.

What about those that work from 6-4, with two young kids at home. Their kids still don't sleep though the night properly. They awake completely exhausted. The still need/like to train, but completely feel like bagging it some days. Can they get a pass as well too please?

or just people that work, train, have church and family obligations, a house to take care of, a dog to walk, travel, and still want some semblance of a social life?  not every day allows for 8 hours to sleep at night.  but coffee is way cheaper and just as good as those energy drinks anyways.

and in college -- sheesh -- 40 hours of work plus full load of courses plus homework -- 4 hours of sleep was a GOOD day.

Everyone's busy, everyone has commitments of some sort.  Everyone has to give up something.  I choose to give up some sleep and supliment with caffiene and I dont think I need to ask anyone for a pass to do so. Wink

But you on the other hand do need a pass, and I am not about to give you one, so you are going to have to look else where for such a pass

i don't need a pass, i was just pointing out that we all know more sleep is the answer, just not always an option to an earlier poster.

I know I'll get flamed, blasted and criticized for this but...

The human body only knows the physiology that the human body knows.  And for most people the human body needs 8 hours of sleep at night.  All of those other things you choose to heap on to yourself.  It's a matter of priorities.  Some are steep obligations, but your body doesn't know shinola from priorities.  It just knows that it works best with 8 hours of sleep.  So you choose to burn the candle at both ends and make up for it with a chemical substance to make up for the lack of sleep.

You can fight your own body and keep pounding caffeine drinks to stay awake or you can alter your lifestyle to be more natural for your body.  I'm not preaching to you to change your lifestyle - it's yours.  If you feel that the status quo is just fine, then, well... it's fine.  But this is a triathlon board and you probably already know the answer to how you would do training, racing, health, mental-health-wise if you managed 8 hours sleep per night/day.

Given where I live and the current economy, I don't have a choice about night shift. Trust me, I've been job hunting for a year and a half - if I could be on days, I would!

And actually, my body prefers 10 hours of sleep when I'm on days. It is different for everyone.

That said, I otherwise totally agree with you - sleep is WAY more beneficial and healthier than energy drinks. I try to only do caffeine when I am trying to buck my body's system for a day, not a cup of coffee or an energy drink (or two or three) every day. Still, it is nice that alternatives are there!

NO PASS FOR YOU!

Maybe we need a smart a$$ font? I wasn't exactly being sarcastic, at the same time, it wasn't completely a statement of my most cherished beleifs.

But I'm still in agreement with Big Fuzz, I couldn't have said it as well so I'll defer to his post two above mine.

I like 10 hours of sleep too.

I'll also add my personal problems with energy drinks. I already have sleep issues. If I pound an energy drink on a Monday I won't sleep well that night which means Tuesday I wake up tired again and it becomes an endless cycle of not getting enough sleep because I was so sleepy that I pound something with caffeine and end up not sleeping well. The same cycle happens if I don't exercise for a couple days. I can't sleep well unless I exercise, but when I haven't slept well I have a hard time getting up to work out. The only way I can break the cycle is to be a zombie for a day, not drink any caffeine or take a nap and work out no matter how tired I am.

Obviously my issues are my own. I really don't have a problem with people drinking them occasionally. What my real issues revolve around are the couch potatoes who live on monster. I know many. They don't do anything all day, but don't sleep at night and end up living on high calorie energy drinks and wonder why they become fat a$$es (I can say that because I'm a fat guy too. It's like bald guys making bald jokes).
