Pre-race routine:

Had my usual breakfast & coffee. I was really glad that I stayed at the hotel instead of driving down, it was great to be in the transition area 20 minutes after leaving the hotel! I also enjoyed the dinner with the BT people - nice to see some old faces, and nice to meet quite a few new (to me) faces.
Event warmup:

Swung my left arm around 3 times, swung my right arm around 4 times (this was a left turning course after all). Wiggled my shoulders approximately 1/2 a wiggle. All set.
Swim
  • 27m 9s
  • 1408 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swam at my lowest possible effort, wanting to keep everything in reserve for the run. Because my wave was relatively small (Clyde/Athena/Relay) there was not as much traffic as the other waves. I had to adjust direction around swimmers here and there but it was fine - less than my other tri's. An enjoyable swim. I got out of the water and did not feel exerted at all. Said hello to my wife, and headed for the transition.
What would you do differently?:

I might consider putting the wet suit on next time just go get some speed for free, but was glad I did not use it.
Transition 1
  • 05m 40s
Comments:

I was 100 feet away from my rack when I realized I had left my anti-bonk snack behind. This cost me some time!
What would you do differently?:

Better planning. Tape the snack to the bike. Order out?
Bike
  • 1h 25m 10s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Took care not to burn my legs on the ride. I enjoyed it, nice and easy. There was a group of 4 of us who kept on leap frogging each other :-) Had some problems with shifting - why does Shimano 105 require so much tuning?
What would you do differently?:

I should have replaced my rear tire before the race. It is worn and is making too much contact with the road, I am sure it is affecting rolling resistance. Also, I think I might start using race tires instead of Continental Gator Skins which are bullet proof for training but not ideal for racing. Also, might consider renting race wheels just to see how much difference they make.
Transition 2
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Lisa and Marianne chewed me out for not running in T2. Ummm... thanks for that... I thought nobody was watching me slack off for a few minutes ;-)
What would you do differently?:

Run, so that Marianne and Lisa don't have to chew me out! Also, next time I'm going to tell the dude next to me that if he does not leave space for my bike it's probably going to end up in the dirt - seriously, it's just rude to park your bike half way into someone else's space and it wastes their time. Not cool!
Run
  • 1h 29m 22s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 14m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I have to keep things in perspective here. I've made huge improvements over the year and even though my running is outright horrible compared to 90% of the people out there, I did run almost all of the 6 miles even though it was at a slow pace. Just 8 months ago I did not think it was even possible I could run 1 mile. Today I ran 6. And next year it's going to be a whole different ball of wax... I've got the whole winter to work on it.
What would you do differently?:

I need to find a reliable way to estimate pace. I could have gone maybe 1 or 2 minutes per mile faster but was very cautious of not getting burned out and hurting my back.
Post race
Warm down:

Just happy to have completed an Olympic distance! I was only supposed to do sprints this year but wanted to see what an Olympic was like.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running... and I am working on it...

Although I have been putting in a decent training effort, maybe I should start doing some planning. Until recently I have been doing whatever activities will blow my hair back for the day. I need to get more organized for the longer distances.

Event comments:

I enjoyed it. Will be back!

Course: Around the edge of the pond. The closer to the edge the shallower it is, with more gunk to eat if you happen to open your mouth at the wrong moment. The buoys were huge and very visible so I did not need to use an external sighting references. Consequently, I'm not quite sure what the course actually look like!! (need to take a look at the map). The water was warm but not hot - I wonder how warm it was for the wet suit people - I'd say well over 90% were wearing them.

Synchronized swimming!  LOL.  According to rcberto I did just that last year at Cran.  I was doing the freestyle when the girl next to me did b ackstroke.  Ane we "hooked arms" a couple times. So yes, it's doable.
Rory:  look for people doing backstroke in your next race.

If anyone needs a warm-up training coach, I am offering my services henceforth.

P.S. Thanks all for the congratulations - all the BT people have been really helpful in pushing me along. Especially Mav! Just to have finished is huge for me. I'm feeling pretty stoked today!!

I wasn't expecting that many wetsuits, either.  It sort of seems like cheating when it's that warm, doesn't it?

Congrats on a great race!  I'm surprised you said you were only supposed to do sprints this year, and that you weren't really following a training plan.  Your logs seemed pretty full (when you started logging, that is) and you seemed well ready for the distance!  Once you get your run training in during the off-season (so much better than trying to really get into it when it's hot out, for sure!), you're going to fly through all the future courses.  Looking forward to eating your dust next year!

Rori, so nice to have a chance to meet and hang out with you this weekend. I think we might both be in trouble for next year. I too have a lot of improving to do to get my running where it should be. I looked at our race reports. You were faster than me everywhere by transition!!! Nice job. I think we might be pushing each other hard for next year. Some day I would like to take this course sub 3 hours again. I think that should be my goal, how about you?

Well, I started logging to try and force myself to become more structured! I was doing way too much cycling, and needed to start getting some balance. I really had no business signing up for an Olympic but what the hell! I think next year I should stick with Olympic and drop my times significantly - the distance seems great for losing weight and maintaining fitness. Are you going to try for HIM or what's the plan?

I think I'm with you on sticking with the Oly next year.  KOM suggests I aim for Hyannis 1/2 marry in Feb, but I think even if I get there that a HIM is a little lofty for someone still figuring out how to run injury and pain free.

I think HIM swim would be piece of cake for either of us, you've got the bike endurance base to work with - I've got a way to reach that, and might be able to get there - but thinking about the 13 miles at the end makes me want to flip the bird at the idea!  Cranberry was a big challenge, and I feel like "I did well for a first oly", but I'd like to feel like I just did well.

So are you going to be an IM relay swimmer for hire?  You could add that to your resume right after Warm Up Coach.

Plan for now is to continue doing oly races as the bulk of my racing. When I can string together at least 5 months of consitant training 5 days a week,  I will go 1/2 IM again. Until then, I just want the consitancy and to loose/maintain weight. You did great for a first oly. nice work.

As for the 2:45 time goal, game on, it would get me to a PR for that race, or at least  I think it would

It was great to see you again Rori! When we met at the Hop months ago I don't think either of us thought an Oly would be possible.  SWEET isn't it!  I too have improve my running on the winter training list.  Looks like we will have lots of BT company for a few winter races.   Should be fun!

Congrats on a great job on your first OLY!

KOM, Thanks!! It was good to see you too! I remember chatting at the picnic table about distances -- it was only a few months ago but we've come a long way since then.

Mav, thanks, for next year I think I'm going to stick with Olympic distance and work on speed.

KathyG, thanks, looking forward to riding with you after your well earned break... IM Canada completed, wow!!
