Pre-race routine:

got up at 3:45 am.ate most of a pb and jelly bagel and sipped on gadorade on the drive in to penticton.
Swim
  • 1h 25m 11s
  • 3862 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

start wasn't nearly as rough as i was expecting..some touchy feely but was way better than i expected. Had quite a few times where i had so much room i thought i was off course. 2nd half not as nice..some roller waves made me feel slightly ill. on the last few 100 meters was the recipient of 2 punches to the side of my head and a good kick in the chops all hard enough to make my ears ring....but i was glad there was no direct blows to my nose...and no black eyes.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 08m 51s
Comments:

took my time drying off...wasn't as dizzy as i was expecting...was sure nice to have chairs to sit in to change. made a quick potty break and headed to sunscreen and ate a gel before grabbing my bike
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 7h 36m 59s
  • 180.25 kms
  • 23.67 km/hr
Comments:

stared off good, richter's pass went better than i thought it would. the heat took it's toll on me by yellow lake...i was very close to getting off my bike and walking up it....was the lowest point for me of the race...almost cried when i saw the pit crew near the top as i was really struggling to keep going. stopped at the top and dumped a few bottles of ice water. I did squeeze out a few tears when i saw the 140k mark...not of joy but of thank god only 40 more to go.fought a head wind all the way into penticton.
What would you do differently?:

nothing...the heat was my issue and you just can't control the weather... i think if our summer was better i may have been better..but maybe not
Transition 2
  • 09m 56s
Comments:

was slow in slow-mo with this one. got my fresh socks and shoes on and realized i hadn't changed my shorts. stopped at the potty again drank some gadorade ate a gel and stopped for some more sunscreen.
Run
  • 5h 38m 44s
  • 42.16 kms
  • 08m 02s  min/km
Comments:

my legs felt good and i ran most of the first 13k. struggled with GI issues for most of the run and had to give up solid food for the run.made the first half unpleasent. only grabbed my jacket and more advil from my special needs bag. the heat was only an issue for most of the first half i dumped lots of icewater and sponges on me,and stuffed ice in my bra. walked a lot stopped to use bathrooms at most aid stations.only two blisters on the bottom of my pinky toes. not sure where i got the energy for the last burst of speed at the finish but i really wanted to get in under 15 hrs.
What would you do differently?:

don't know...i'm not sure if the gi issues was from all the bananas i ate...did i eat too much or too late the night before? while waiting for my massage i heard a lot of others had the same issues...maybe it was the heat
Post race
Warm down:

inhaled my pizza..it was sooo good! hit the massage tent. popped some tylenol, changed out of my sticky clothes and walked back to the car. used some ice packs on my quads on the way home but don't think they helped much through my sweats.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

GI issues and heat

Congrats on finishing strong on a hard day.

I did walk up some of the hills up to Yellow Lake...it was hot day, no shade and windy.

You dealt with what the day brought and did great...congrats Ironman

Ice in the bra? I have to try that! Great effort on battling through the day! It was crazy hot and the smoke just made it that much tougher as well! Way to go!

yes it was a handy place to store ice....may have got a little frostbitten and i must have got some curious looks when i delved in for some to eat...not to mention the "chinking" noise i made while running.
