Champion 7136![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Knoxville area | Subject: Dropping my friggin chain... and stumped.Ok Guys, like Dr. House, I need some idea's thrown at me. Here's what we know about the disease. 1.) 09 Scott CR1 team, 105 components all the way around. Never wrecked, less than 300miles 2.) Shifting is smooth 99% of the time, barrel adjuster and limiters are optimally set on the trainer. 3.) Outside near my house is a hill, I climb in lower gear, come down, then on the straightaway back to my house, I shift back to a bigger gear (still haven't moved front Derailleur) and the chain completely drops. 4.) The above (3) has happened, as explained, 3 times in the last 3 rides. 100% of the time, same scenario every time. 5.) All these rides have been 30+ minutes long, with no shifting problems on the road/trails before the above. Anybody got any clues... kinda worried before my 50miler saturday. Thanks |

That does seem odd. You might try adjusting the front derailleur high limit stop in a bit, so it just barely clears the chain when you're on the largest cog in back. Don't know if it will make a difference, but you might also check front derailleur height. It should clear the big ring by 1-2 mm, and maybe if it's a bit too high it might leave enough room for the chain to slip off? Mind that I'm just speculating with both of those suggestions, I'm not a wrench and don't have any experience with the problem you're having. |

That's something I hadn't thought about, I'll give it a look today... I agree it doesn't make much sense I'm dropping in the front without messing with the FD. |

What if you wait 30 seconds longer after coming down the hill or shift while on the hill? Any difference? I'm wondering if you're shifting while hitting a bad section of stutter bumps. |

I'm wondering if you're shifting while hitting a bad section of stutter bumps. see, nothing on the trainer, I CANT make it drop, even under heavy stressful shifting. I shift down before the hill, and then don't shift back up until I'm back on the straights. That's what is odd, there are tons of hills where I ride, but here is the one that gets me... maybe I am hitting something I don't "feel" |

Master 1890![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cypress, CA | Subject: RE: Dropping my friggin chain... and stumped. Are you shifting more than one cog at a time when this happens? Maybe too many too quickly? Another shot in the dark--as you shift to smaller cogs, the rear derailleur cage has to spring back to take up the extra chain. Maybe if it's not springing back enough (weak spring or maybe just a sticky spot in its travel), it's allowing slack in the chain which causes it to drop. |

Champion 7136![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Knoxville area | Subject: RE: Dropping my friggin chain... and stumped.Update - but still not sure. Put the bike on the trainer last night... looked over everything, and started *hammering* the shifts. Can't make it drop the chain, even in a stressful (low gear into big ring) FD shift. I'm stumped. All I've done since I brought the bike in (when it dropped the chain) was put the chain back on and adjust the barrel adjuster. Gary - haven't been up that hill in the big chainring... very little flex that I can tell. Rear D is working properly. Tjh - I'm not shifting abnormally compared to the rest of my ride (like I said all 30+ minutes) as to the rear d not traveling far enough back... I'm going to check it out, but it seems like this (like most of the idea's I've had and you guys have had) would cause similar trouble on the trainer. The only that I can think is, and I too am grasping at straws - is "maybe" the barrel adjuster is unscrewing itself from "rough" terrain? I would say it's just the rough terrain / hills, but it would seem to me it would be causing the problems THEN and not a minute or so later. Oh well, 50mile ride is tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know if it's a fluke to annoy me or if I'm going to have to become a "johnny on the spot" mechanic. Thanks again guys... I'm going to hope it's just "ghost pain" until my SRAM force get's put on the CR1. |

Veteran 263![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What used to be the country, PA | Subject: RE: Dropping my friggin chain... and stumped.I would clean and spray lube the derailleurs, especially the spring on the back one. I had a mystery front derailleur problem where it wouldn't shift down to the small cog on the one big his with traffic near my house (real nice after 50 miles...). I spent hours trying to fix it by adjusting the stops, angle, etc. but once I cleaned it and sprayed the out of it, it's worked fine ever since. |

Excellent Idea, maybe I haven't seen the forest for the trees. |
